A cardiologist shares 4 worst foods for high cholesterol—and what she eats to keep her ‘heart healthy’

Want to sustain a balanced heart and mind? Continue to keep a close eye on your cholesterol numbers.

LDL (small-density lipoprotein) cholesterol builds up in the arteries and varieties plaque, which blocks blood move to the brain. HDL (significant-density lipoprotein) cholesterol picks up the LDL and takes it to the liver to be processed.

The optimal amounts change from individual to particular person, so usually check with your physician initial.

As a cardiologist who treats clients with higher cholesterol, I usually try out to use diet as drugs initial. Listed here are the four worst food items for significant cholesterol — and what I try to eat as a substitute to maintain my coronary heart nutritious:

1. Crimson meat

Certainly, that includes burgers, ribs, steak and pork chops. If you you should not want to cut out pink meat completely, focus on modest quantities of lean meat. And by small, I signify a part size of up to three ounces — and consume crimson meat at most, once a 7 days.

Keep in mind that poultry also incorporates saturated unwanted fat, so staying away from purple meat would not necessarily suggest you must load up on chicken.

As for meat possibilities, I’m commonly skeptical about engineered foodstuff. To me, plants were being never ever meant to bleed.

What to consume as a substitute: Think fish and shellfish. Shrimp might be large in cholesterol, but as prolonged as you you should not douse it with butter, it will provide you with lots of protein even though leaving your blood cholesterol on your own.

Some other tasty lean protein solutions are white-fleshed fish like tilapia, halibut, cod and bass.

2. Anything at all fried

Frying foods normally ups the calorie count mainly because saturated or trans fats and cholesterol are absorbed by the food items during the approach.

What to take in as an alternative: Bake potatoes, kale or broccoli to a crisp when you might be craving crunch. Or, you can spend in an air fryer, which works by using a lot significantly less fats.

3. Processed meat

The Planet Wellness Firm has categorized processed meats these as bacon, sizzling pet dogs and salami as carcinogens. Processed meat is also loaded in sodium and saturated fat.

What to consume instead: Phony bacon is unlikely to fulfill your cravings for a BLT. My advice? Minimize way again on these products and make them exclusive situation treats.

4. Baked goods

Mass-manufactured cookies, cakes and pastries are normally dense in energy, minimal in nutrition, and include big amounts of fat (particularly saturated fats like butter and shortening) and sugar. All of these are large culprits of substantial cholesterol.

What to take in rather: Bake at household, and command the total and form of unwanted fat and sugar you use.

A Personal Trainer Shares her Favorite Cheap Healthy Foods

Inflation is really impacting food prices and, therefore, all our wallets are getting skinnier. Many of us have a tendency to assume that healthy food is expensive and it can be easy to feel frustrated when you feel like you have to choose between between saving money and eating healthy.

As a trainer, I believe that nutrition is crucial to good health and no one should have to skimp on that. There are a lot of affordable grocery items that are both healthy and inexpensive. Here are my tips for how to feed yourself — and your loved ones — delicious, nutritious meals that don’t break the bank.

A cheap and healthy grocery list

  • Frozen veggies: I buy whatever’s on sale because they’re as nutritious as fresh produce, but don’t spoil. I throw them into a bowl and microwave them or add them to a stirfry.
  • Frozen berries: Whatever type is on sale dictates my smoothie flavor for the week! I’m partial to raspberries — I love the sweetness with a little sour — but if pineapple chunks are on sale then I buy those instead. They also serve as ice so that my smoothies aren’t watered down, and frozen fruit doesn’t spoil like fresh fruit so I don’t have to worry about wasting it. Plus, some berries — like strawberries — are so packed with nutrients that dietitians call them super fruits!
  • Canned tuna: This is a super fast protein I can dump on top of salads or put on top of open-faced peppers with slices of pickles and cucumbers on top for a crunch.
  • Chickpeas: Canned beans are great to have on hand, and I’m partial to chickpeas because, being Lebanese, I can easily whip up hummus for a protein-packed snack, or I can put them in the oven with some seasoning for baked chickpeas as a snack or salad topper.
  • Rotisserie chicken: Shred this already-cooked chicken and make chicken tacos, chicken dip or a chicken stirfry.
  • Tofu: Sub in tofu instead of meat for a vegetarian meal or a Meatless Monday. Or instead of buying pricey eggs, scramble tofu which has a similar texture to scrambled eggs to make your next breakfast scramble! You can also add tofu to smoothies instead of protein powder. If you’re not sure how to cook tofu, check out our guide for how to cook tofu.
  • Lentils: Lentils are another meatless option to get in protein. Whether you make a stew, soup, or are simply looking for a non-meat protein option on top of a salad, these beans are great for your wallet and your protein intake!
  • Store-brand cheese: If you don’t feel bloated after eating cheese, check out non name-brand cheeses at your grocery store that are still reasonably priced. Use cheese as a snack for protein or as a topper for warm casseroles!

‘I have to be really cognizant of what I put in my body, and I think I realized [in the past] that I wasn’t doing that to the best of my ability,’ Bush Hager, 41, told the outlet. ‘My kids were eating really healthy, and I was just grabbing whatever I could.’

The Read with Jenna book club founder shared that she starts her mornings with a breathing meditation before having not one, but three different beverages for breakfast.

She explained that she reminds herself to drink as much water throughout the day as she can. She keeps a bottle of water by her coffee machine and makes herself ‘chug it’ while she is waiting for her coffee to brew.

In addition to her water and coffee, she has a scoop of Amazing Grass Green Superfood Powder in a glass of water, which has two servings of fruits and vegetables.

Bush Hager has a paid partnership with the brand, and she recently shared a sponsored video of herself making her morning green drink on Instagram.

The mother of three, who practices intermittent fasting, doesn’t have anything else for breakfast before heading to the NBC gym, where she will do a Peloton class or lift weights before work.

She also works out with dance fitness instructor Amanda Bartolomeo, whom she has been training with since last year.

‘I’m obsessed with jumping on mini trampolines or doing dance cardio,’ she told Women’s Health. ‘But those things are hard to do before work.’

For lunch, she likes to have a hearty salad, and while the ingredients may vary from day to day, she always makes sure to include protein, beans, broccoli, and other veggies.

She did not inherit her love of broccoli from her later grandfather, former President George H.W. Bush, who famously hated the vegetable and was vocal about his distaste for it.

Bush Hager noted that she’s ‘not a huge snacker,’ but when a craving strikes, she will grab a Chobani yogurt and add peanut butter and almonds.

After a day of work, she will sit down to dinner with her husband, Henry Hager, and their three children, Mila, nine, Poppy, seven, and Hal, three.

Typical family meals include fish and broccoli or the Texas native’s personal favorite, tacos with lean turkey.

‘My kids are usually like, tacos again?’ she admitted. ‘But I’m like, [they’re] the best.’

Bush Hager’s interview with Women’s Health comes a year after she discussed her new workout regimen on the Today show in January 2022.

She was talking about new year’s resolutions when her fourth-hour co-host Hoda Kotb commended her on her appearance, saying viewers have been writing in about how great she looks.

‘Can I tell you something that I’ve noticed and our viewers have noticed over the past few weeks?’ Kotb said. ‘People have noticed that there’s like a transformation that’s been happening with you. You are — they are just saying, “Jen is looking amazing. She’s never looked this good.”‘

‘That’s so sweet,’ Bush Hager replied, but Kotb wasn’t done gushing.

‘Something is happening,’ she insisted. ‘I think for someone like you and me who constantly is berating and belittling, I think one of the things we should do in January is celebrate when something good happens. Celebrate it!’

Bush Hager, who welcomed her third child, Hal, in 2019, explained that getting back in shape has been a process for her.

‘I will say I think I have figured out what works for me,’ she said. ‘And I think the hard thing is I think we expect things to happen overnight. This has actually been almost six months.’

The mother of three credited her toned physique to her grueling early-morning workouts with her personal trainer.

‘The difference is I wake up before the show and work out — and really work out. I work out with an awesome woman named Amanda. Donna joins me sometimes,’ she said of Today contributor Donna Farizan.

‘Donna is a great inspiration,’ she added. ‘She gets up at the crack of dawn and meets me. And another friend of mine comes.’

While Bush Hager was feeling good, she encouraged others who are struggling with their weight to be kind to themselves.

‘Here’s the other thing — anybody that’s either gained weight during the pandemic or had babies and gained weight, it just takes time, and you have to give yourself that grace,’ she said. ‘Because my body isn’t 18 anymore.’

Food creator shares 5 healthy meal recipes for 2 on a $75 budget

Cooking healthy meals under a certain budget may seem daunting, but one food creator is sharing grocery lists, tips and recipes to make it a bit easier.

With $75 in hand for a trip to Trader Joe’s and five recipes at the ready, recipe developer and food blogger Jenn Lueke cooked up a new series on social media to help show home cooks how to make a handful of healthy meals for two people.

The food content creator of five years shared her full shopping list, additional best practices for your next trip to the store, plus five healthy recipe ideas with “Good Morning America,” below.

Lueke regularly concocts original recipes for her website goodeats and posts them on Instagram along with “little hacks” and more of her own personal health journey.

“I do a lot of like grocery haul type videos,” she said citing her trips to retailers that are familiar to home cooks, including Costco, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and more to show the prices of approachable products that are more accessible than niche influencer-backed wellness trends or products.

“Trying to show people how to eat healthy on a budget is kind of my main goal on my TikTok,” she continued. “It’s expensive to eat healthy. I think the reason people are really attracted to [my content] is they want to eat healthy, but they see a lot of influencers promoting such expensive products — and it’s really overwhelming. That’s kind of what prompted all of my healthy grocery hauls and then this series.”

She added, “I just love meal prep. It’s helped me a lot with getting healthier — being able to combine something that’s budget friendly, that you can like do with a busy schedule, you can reduce food waste, all those things check the boxes.”

For her latest series, Lueke chose to shop at Trader Joe’s because she said she finds their options to be “relatively budget friendly” especially for “produce and proteins.”

“You can shop anywhere you know you like, there’s nothing that’s brand specific,” she explained.

Meal prepped vegetables for a week of healthy meals.

“I like to pick four or five meals that I’m going to cook for the week and then I make my list from there and try to see what I can use for multiple things,” Lueke suggested.

For example with produce, Lueke will look to use recipes that “use the same produce every day” or one ingredient in multiple ways.

“If you really wanted to make a unique dinner every night and you didn’t plan it, you could easily spend $200 plus at the grocery store,” she said. “If you don’t plan it and you’re not having that overlap of spices and [condiments] and the proteins, you can easily rack up a huge grocery bill. It’s really about planning.”

Powerhouse ingredients that go a long way

Despite not using them in this recipe series, Lueke hailed eggs as a workhorse ingredient that can stretch to work in many meals and recipes.

Additionally, she said, “I always get chickpeas, coconut milk — it’s like a good paleo vegan option. I always get some kind of greens every week because you can freeze them and then add them to smoothies if you don’t use them — that kind of goes for all produce honestly, I always chop everything up, but if I don’t use it, I freeze it.”

Easy and versatile proteins for weeknight dinners

“I like to do like a ground chicken or ground turkey when I can. I like to do chicken thighs because they’re a little bit cheaper than chicken breasts,” she said. “[Opt] for those more affordable things [instead of] pre-cooked or pre-portioned things that just make it more expensive, because if you take a little bit of time to prep it, you’ll save like 50{bf0515afdcaddba073662ceb89fbb62b6b1bf123143c0e06b788e1946e8c353f}.”
