Fairview, Sanford health care systems plan to merge

Updated: 6:15 p.m.

Nearly a decade after unsuccessfully attempting a merger, South Dakota-based Sanford Health and Minnesota’s Fairview Health Services said Tuesday they’re again in talks to combine.

The two regional health care giants say they intend to complete a merger next year. The new entity would be called Sanford Health and be run by Sanford’s current CEO. The deal would include the University of Minnesota hospitals, which Fairview purchased in 1997.

“The synergies between the two organizations are going to allow us to marshal the collective resources of both organizations together to better serve our patients and help us deliver on a promise of world-class care to every single patient,” said Sanford Health President and CEO Bill Gassen in an interview with MPR News.

Financial details and any cost-cutting plans tied to the proposed merger were not immediately disclosed.

In 2013, the two health systems pursued a similar merger, but talks broke down amid an onslaught of public criticism. Some state lawmakers pursued legislation that would’ve blocked Sanford from controlling the University of Minnesota hospitals.

Then-Attorney General Lori Swanson raised concerns about a merger because of the role that tax breaks and donations from Minnesota and Minnesotans played in Fairview’s development.

Current Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said late Tuesday his office is investigating the proposed transaction.

If approved this time around, the deal would create a massive health care system stretching across the rural and urban Upper Midwest.

Sioux Falls-based Sanford operates in six states, including Minnesota, and describes itself as the nation’s largest rural health care system, including 47 medical centers and about 45,000 employees.

“Because they’re contiguous, it allows us to be able to coordinate care back and forth,” said Fairview CEO James Hereford. “But frankly, any issues about anti-competitiveness, there’s just no basis for that.”

Sanford Health is named for St. Paul native and University of Minnesota graduate T. Denny Sanford, a philanthropist who made his fortune in the subprime, high-interest credit card business. The Sioux Valley Hospital and Health System was renamed Sanford Health in 2007 after Sanford donated $400 million to the Sioux Falls-based care system.

Minneapolis-based Fairview has 11 hospitals, including the University of Minnesota Medical Center, and about 31,000 employees.

Fairview has been struggling financially for several years. It reported an operating loss in 2021 of $132.6 million on top of a $209 million loss in 2020. In financial statements, the system has pointed to the COVID-19 crisis as contributing to its financial woes, driving up operating costs while driving down the number of nonelective procedures.

Ownership and control of the U’s medical center — the state’s top teaching hospital — is likely to be an issue closely examined by Minnesota lawmakers as it was in 2013. The center would no longer be Minnesota owned.

The University of Minnesota is still weighing the merger possibilities and has questions about the commitment to medical training and research, said Myron Frans, the U’s senior vice president for finance and operations and a former Minnesota budget commissioner.

“We’ve been talking to them, but we have many, many really hard and reasonable questions to ask about how would this merger affect the University of Minnesota,” he told MPR News. “Anything beyond that is still … a source of conjecture on our part.”

The Minnesota Nurses Association late Tuesday said its members will “strongly oppose” the proposed merger because it would “put corporate expansion ahead of patient care.”

Royal Emerald Pharmaceuticals Partners with BioHarvest Sciences to Supply Disruptive Cannabis Solutions to Companies Conducting FDA-Approved Medical Research

This collaboration ensures first-of-their-kind consistent cannabinoid compositions for 575 DEA-licensed cannabis medical research institutions developing cures for PTSD, pain management, anxiety conditions and more

Vancouver, British Columbia and Rehovot, Israel–(Newsfile Corp. – November 16, 2022) –  BioHarvest Sciences (CSE: BHSC) (OTCQB: CNVCF) (FSE: 8MV), a leading biotech company focused on plant bio-cells growth for the nutraceutical and the medicinal cannabis markets, today announced the signing of a binding Letter of Intent (LOI) with Royal Emerald Pharmaceuticals (REP), one of only seven Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) bulk manufacturing registration holders permitted to grow marijuana in the United States for drug related studies approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. This follows BioHarvest’s October 25th announcement that it could produce unique compositions based on a CBD hemp plant that dramatically increase cannabinoid concentrations (by weight) versus the original plant.

The 3-year initial term (with extension provisions) exclusive arrangement allows the supply of BioHarvest cannabis products for research purposes to pharmaceutical companies, research institutions and other DEA registered entities in the United States federally, and opens the door to advance cannabis research initiatives for drug development through cannabinoid compositions not found in nature. Under the multi-year deal, BioHarvest will be REP’s exclusive provider of cannabis that is produced from non-traditional cultivation methods for scientific, medical and research purposes across the DEA-regulated U.S. market. As part of the LOI, REP has participated with $1 million in BioHarvest’s convertible loan investment instrument that closed its second tranche on November 15th.

Cannabis-based medicines could be a boon to pharmaceutical companies that are threatened today by the legalization of cannabis. A number of studies have demonstrated a reduction in prescription drug use in Medicaid and Medicare populations directly resulting from the legalization of cannabis. Together, REP and BHSC can offer pharmaceutical companies consistent medical-grade cannabis at highly attractive manufacturing costs with signature patentable compositions tailored for addressing specific medical indications.

“I have unprecedented confidence in BioHarvest’s platform technology and their unique cannabis compositions especially after visiting their R&D and manufacturing facilities in Israel,” said Douglas Rosenberg, Chief Executive Officer of Royal Emerald Pharmaceuticals. “Cannabis-derived drugs are at the precipice of a tremendous opportunity right now as traditional pharmaceutical markets transition in search of innovation and technological advancements that are utilizing cannabis to deliver better solutions. Together we are well-positioned for the expected significant increase in U.S. demand for medical-grade cannabis for therapeutic research. I look forward to a productive and mutually prosperous partnership.”

“We’re extremely proud to partner with Royal Emerald to pair our breakthrough technology with their mission to revolutionize the cannabis medical research ecosystem by introducing unique and patentable cannabis compositions that are non-addictive and effectively treat a myriad of issues currently ailing our global communities,” said BioHarvest CEO Ilan Sobel. ” BioHarvest and REP are committed to developing life-changing solutions for major medical conditions which today are not being adequately treated by existing, chemically synthesized drugs. Imagine what can be accomplished if researchers and the medical community at large are assured of batch-to-batch consistency and the ability to fine-tune the Cannabis based therapy to specific medical indications. That is truly revolutionary.”

Using a patented technology in which vital plant cells are grown in bioreactors, BioHarvest has the unique ability to produce medicinal grade cannabis with consistent compositions by increasing, controlling, and fine-tuning the concentrations of different major and minor cannabinoids. This could help researchers to potentially develop previously unattainable cures for major health challenges such as ADHD, pain management, sleep disorders, and anxiety.

Dr. Christopher D’Adamo, Director of the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Center for Integrated Medicine, described BioHarvest’s technology as a major advancement.

“Today marks a historical milestone in the pioneering and development of future full-spectrum cannabis drugs which the medical establishment has been eyeing its potential to address many chronic health indications in need of better treatment options,” D’Adamo said. “In addition, BioHarvest’s ability to provide signature cannabis compositions with a breadth of cannabinoids, and with batch consistency and patentability, will no doubt be a major incentive for companies to actively engage and invest in Cannabis based drugs”.

REP is one of only seven companies in the U.S. that hold DEA bulk-manufacturing licenses for scientific medical research. It is permitted to provide cannabis to at least 575 institutions that have DEA research licenses for cannabis research. They range from pharmaceutical companies to academic and medical institutions to government agencies such as the Department for Veterans Affairs and the National Institute on Drug Abuse. REP also has a General Services Administration license which enables the company together with BioHarvest to apply for major government grants from government agencies for cannabis research.

Under the LOI, and subject to the obtainment of the Israeli health authorities manufacturing license, the cannabis products supplied by BioHarvest will be produced in the facility in Israel. The future establishment of a manufacturing facility at REP’s premises in California is contemplated under certain conditions. The LOI also includes provisions with respect to future potential development of medical drugs by BioHarvest, REP and jointly.

Investor Webinar – Wednesday November 16, 2pm EST | 11am PST

Given the magnitude of this announcement, and what it means for the pioneering of cannabis drug development to focus on major indications that today are not being adequately addressed by pharmaceutical drug companies, the Company will host a special investor event today at 11am PST | 2pm EST, where BioHarvest Sciences CEO Ilan Sobel will be joined by the CEO of Royal Emerald Pharmaceuticals, Douglas Rosenberg. All interested media and investors are invited to preregister via this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_y44ONRvVQ9Ou5bhWtHrvAA

Michelle Obama says she had to ease nation into a first lady with Black hair: ‘Let me keep my hair straight. Let’s get health care passed’

Michelle Obama says she intentionally waited until she left the White House to finally wear her hair in braids, suggesting that the country was “just getting adjusted” to a Black woman as first lady.

“They ain’t ready for it!” Obama told Ellen DeGeneres on Tuesday, as she kicked off a nationwide book tour in Washington to promote her new self-help book and memoir “The Light We Carry.”

“The code of ethics at a workplace, as Black women we deal with it, the whole thing about do you show up with your natural hair?” Obama said.

“Braids, ya’ll!” Obama exclaimed to applause from the sold-out crowd, as she motioned to her hairstyle.

“We gotta ease up on the people,” Obama quipped about how she wore her hair while living in the executive mansion.

“They tripped out when Barack wore a tan suit,” Obama continued, referring to the then-president’s 2014 sartorial choice that quickly became a viral sensation.

“The great indignity, the scandal of the Obama administration,” the former first lady said with a laugh.

Dramatizing what she imagined the reaction would’ve been if she debuted braids while in the White House, Obama took on the tone of her critics and said, “Remember when she wore braids? Those are terrorist braids! Those are revolutionary braids!”

“Let me keep my hair straight,” Obama continued. “Let’s get health care passed.”

Obama said she’d sometimes tease her team by mentioning a desire to switch up her look.

“I would get my staff all worried, too. I was like, ‘I was thinking about getting braids,’” Obama chuckled as she stroked her hair.

“That’s the African American experience,” Obama said, “but women in offices that are worried, ‘Should I wear skirts? Should I wear pantyhose?’ I hate pantyhose.”

“But when you’re carrying all this other stuff, this mask, these differences and you’re trying to do your job, it’s just an extra burden on overcoming,” she told DeGeneres.

Obama’s appearance at the Warner Theatre coincided with former President Trump’s announcement on Tuesday in Florida that he was launching a 2024 White House bid. No mention was made of Trump by name at the event, but Obama did reflect on the “painful” experience of his 2016 victory.

“You don’t want to make this personal, but as I write in the book, it hurt. It hurt because you wonder was it a rebuke of the eight years, the sacrifice we made? Was it complacency? What was it?” Obama, 58, said.

“We sacrificed a lot to make that set of changes and because not enough people voted, that was that.”

In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Obama said, “You’re looking at the world and you’re looking at the world literally fall apart before your very eyes. And for us, it was particularly painful because we knew this would happen.”

“I mean, if you — if you guys recall, I said, ‘Don’t vote for this guy.”

“I have to say, and I should have listened to you, I regret voting for him,” DeGeneres, an outspoken Trump critic, deadpanned. “I thought he was a good guy,” DeGeneres joked.

Saying while she didn’t want to “talk too much politics,” Obama told the audience, “The truth is, we have a vested interest in making sure that more people feel seen.”

“That more people feel like they have a stake in what’s going on. People need jobs, they need housing, they need to feel like they can get ahead, they need to feel like they have a stake in this world and then they won’t tear it apart,” she said.

“They won’t tear it apart with racism, or with violence, or with crime because it’s theirs.”

Despite the slowdown in elective medical procedures prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 has been a banner year for medical device manufacturers.

ntuitive Surgical opened its Peachtree Corners, Georgia, campus nearly 10 years ago, serving as a primary training facility for surgeons and care teams on the East Coast. For 27 years, the advanced robotic systems company, headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, has changed the landscape of medical practice through minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery. Dozens of hospitals around Georgia use Intuitive’s systems and technologies, such as the da Vinci, with portions of the da Vinci XI and X systems manufactured in Peachtree Corners, a northeast Atlanta suburb in the metro area’s booming Gwinnett County.

Despite the slowdown in elective medical procedures prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 has been a banner year for medical device manufacturers.

Intuitive plans to expand its Georgia site to 750,000 sq. ft. with a $500 million investment to include manufacturing and engineering operations, training facilities and administrative offices. Now under construction, the site (about a mile from Site Selection’s headquarters) will be opening in phases until completion, with full operation anticipated by 2024.

“This expansion is part of our broader, multi-year global growth strategy to build and expand global ‘hubs’ where we can best support our customers and all elements of our business,” says Eric Torbenson, senior manager of global public affairs at Intuitive. “Over the next few years, we anticipate adding approximately 1,200 employees in manufacturing, production, distribution, engineering, sales, customer training, customer service and more.”

Torbenson tells Site Selection that access to a strong and diverse talent pool and quality infrastructure were key factors in Intuitive’s decision to expand in Georgia.

Peachtree Corners City Manager Brian Johnson says Intuitive’s investment is the largest economic development project in Gwinnett County’s history. With the creation of 1,200 high-paying jobs, Johnson notes the move is a “game changer” for the community, a win that state and local officials worked hard to score.

The impact on the local economy through increased need for housing, education and retail developments brings challenges that Johnson looks forward to addressing. Investments like Intuitive’s not only bring new talent to the area, but site acquisitions from suppliers as well.

“These are companies that want to be close to the mothership,” Johnson says. “We have definitely had interest and are working with some of those companies now to show why they should move to Peachtree Corners.”

CBRE’s Americas Life Sciences Leader Matthew Gardner says markets like Atlanta are gaining recognition.

“I think that’s a very important signal for the industry to hear they can find a highly educated life sciences workforce in a number of markets around the U.S.”

— Matthew Gardner, Americas Life Sciences Leader, CBRE

“There’s something really interesting as a signal to other multinationals about that decision, which is that a lot of the industry feels like it has matured in Massachusetts and California and has to think about [which] emerging markets should be next,” he says. “I think that’s a very important signal for the industry to hear they can find a highly educated life sciences workforce in a number of markets around the U.S.”

Georgia, with assets such as the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in its holster, indeed has gained recognition and attracted investments from top players in the industry, including Boston Scientific and Moderna.

CBRE’s top five life sciences markets — Boston, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, New York and San Diego — tote a high cost of living relative to salary earnings. Atlanta finds itself in a favorable situation as the annual cost of living averages $48,752, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That low cost of living in comparison to other metros plays a vital role in not only talent retention, but real estate costs as well.

CBRE’s 2022 Life Sciences Talent Report ranked Atlanta 14th out of the top 25 life sciences research talent clusters. “Denver/Boulder, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Houston, Atlanta, Dallas/Ft. Worth and Miami, though sometimes overlooked, also have world-class health centers and universities, and in turn, sizable pools of life sciences research talent,” the report stated.

Institutions such as Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology offer a wealth of skilled talent to add to over 75,000 life science employees in the state. Between 2016 and 2020 the state produced over 33,000 graduates with life sciences-related degrees. Over the next 10 years, Georgia occupations in the industry are expected to increase by 7{bf0515afdcaddba073662ceb89fbb62b6b1bf123143c0e06b788e1946e8c353f}, higher than the U.S. average.

Just Up the Street

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced in June 2022 that Boston Scientific plans to expand its Johns Creek facility. About 11 miles northwest of Initiative’s campus, what was once an EndoChoice site became part of Boston Scientific’s Endoscopy business in 2016 after a $210 million acquisition.

For over 40 years, the medical technology leader has designed and manufactured a portfolio of over 17,000 products. The company’s medical devices and therapies cater toward less-invasive procedures, its Georgia facility specializing in endoscopy.

Boston Scientific is investing $62.5 million to expand and integrate a new manufacturing and supply chain plant. The expansion will create 340 new jobs, adding to its roster of 300 employees in Fulton County.

“As we expand our presence in Georgia, we remain grateful to all of our local employees whose work is already making a difference for healthcare providers and patients around the world,” said Brad Sorenson, executive vice president of global operations at Boston Scientific, in a press release. “Our new site in Johns Creek will enable continued growth as we fulfill our mission to transform lives.”

Like the city of Peachtree Corners, Fulton County figures prominently in Atlanta’s budding life sciences market. According to Georgia Power’s 2021 Life Sciences Database there are 110 medical device companies in Georgia, employing over 10,000. The sector accounts for $2.8 billion of Georgia’s Gross Regional Product.

Georgia’s potential to be one of the next big medical devices markets is not a far-fetched idea.

Should you apply ghee on chapati? Is it healthy?

Many of us like to have chapati or roti with a dash of ghee or clarified butter. Not only does it make the rotis soft, but also prevents it from turning dry and flaky. But do experts suggest adding ghee to rotis? If yes, how much? Answering these questions is Aanchal Sogani, a certified nutritionist, who recently took to Instagram to share all about this popular combination.

“Several Indian households, especially in the north, apply ghee to chapatis almost as a ritual. Now, in no way does that mean that you start brushing a jar full of ghee on your chapattis. But in moderation, ghee can do wonders for your overall health. Often, when we are on a weight loss spree we think of knocking off ghee from our diets completely. But that’s not how it should be,” she said.

Here’s why ghee helps meet your weight loss goals

*Ghee helps in bringing down the glycemic index of chapati. The glycemic index (GI) is a rating system for foods containing carbohydrates. It shows how quickly each food affects your blood sugar (glucose) level when consumed.

*Ghee makes you feel fuller. You won’t need to binge eat on other fattening foods later in day.

*Ghee consists of fat soluble vitamins, which aid weight loss. Ghee also plays a key role in balancing hormones and maintaining healthy cholesterol.

*Ghee also has a high heat point, which prevents it from producing free radicals that damage cell function.

ghee Are you having enough ghee in your meals? (Source: Getty Images/Thinkstock)

How much ghee is enough?

“Go ahead and brush your chapati with ghee. But, make sure you don’t go overboard with the quantity. A small teaspoon for one roti is just about fine. Anything done in excess is harmful for the body,” she said.

Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar also took to Instagram to write, “Cooking in ghee and adding it to dals, rice, bhakri, bhatis and chapatis is a must. It has essential fatty acids and makes it easy to assimilate vitamin D, A and E. It is also a taste enhancer.”

Ghee can be had first thing in the morning or even added to rotis or rice, said nutritionist and food coach Anupama Menon. “It can be used in cooking as it has a high smoking point and lends a unique flavour to dals and sweets. It is mostly affordable, and the luxury of taste it imparts is phenomenal. But we often stay away from consuming ghee thinking it is high on calories, which it is, but so are the other oils we use in the kitchen. While it is a good addition to the fats used in daily routine, it just needs to be moderated and used right,” said Menon.

She further told indianexpress.com that since it is “lactose-free”, it is a popular choice of fat in the diet of lactose intolerant individuals.
