Former Biotech CEO Arrested for Implanting Phony Medical Devices in Patients

New bad guy alert: according to an FBI indictment, Florida woman Laura Perryman, the former CEO of a health-tech company called Stimwave, was arrested on Thursday “in connection with a scheme to create and sell a non-functioning dummy medical device for implantation into patients suffering from chronic pain,” Vice reports, accusations that Perryman’s lawyer has since denied.

In other words, the FBI is alleging that Perryman knowingly created and sold fake medical implants that were entirely made out of plastic to medical systems and their patients, under the guise that the devices would be able to ease chronic pain.

The news comes after Stimwave filed for bankruptcy last year, and has previously agreed to pay $10 million over a related whistleblower lawsuit, Reuters reports.

Perryman and Stimwave, which according to Engadget received FDA approval for an early version of its implant back in 2014, actually sold two different rodlike implants, which they claimed could both alleviate pain by way of electrical signaling — no addictive painkillers required.

“From the patient perspective, they definitely want pain-relief alternatives that are not opioids,” Perryman told Engadget in an interview back in 2017, “but taking the leap from opioid to surgery and a tiny battery inside your body sounds daunting.”

Perryman’s firm even had some big-name celebrity sponsors, notably football Hall of Famer Joe Montana.

“If this was another major surgical process, I probably would’ve said no,” Montana told CBS — which did a whole segment documenting Montana’s experience undergoing the “state of the art” procedure — in 2019. “But I really think this is going to be the answer to my knee and I’m looking forward to an hour or two from now when I get done.”

“It’s just like anything,” Montana continued. “What’s good for me is not always what’s good for you, right? Everyone should do their own research on it. But I wouldn’t be doing this and moving forward with it if I didn’t believe it wasn’t something that could help people.”

But as Vice explains, their first product, a nine-inch-long, computer-chip-embedded device dubbed the “Pink Stylet,” was often too large for doctors to comfortably implant into some patients. But rather than turn down any potential sales, the FBI alleges that Perryman and Stimwave instead came out with the “White Stylet,”  which they claimed was just a smaller and more comfortable — but equally as effective — version.

It’s unclear which version of the device Montana received — which, as it turns out, could’ve made a huge difference.

Because the White Stylet was nothing more than a piece of plastic, according to the FBI’s indictment. No computer chip, no electrical signaling. Just plastic.

And they weren’t cheap, either — according to the FBI, Perryman and Stimwave sold the phony plastic tubes at over $16,000 a pop.

“As alleged, at the direction of its founder and CEO Laura Perryman, Stimwave created a dummy medical device component — made entirely of plastic — designed to be implanted in patients for the sole purpose of causing doctors to unwittingly bill Medicare and private insurance companies more than $16,000 for each implantation of the piece of plastic,” US Attorney Damian Williams said in the indictment.

“The defendant and Stimwave did this,” he added, “so that they could charge medical providers many thousands of dollars for purchasing their medical device.”

Meanwhile, Perryman’s lawyer Jared Dwyer of Greenberg Traurig called the allegations “wrong, starting with the description of the neurostimulator that Laura invented” in a statement to Futurism.

“Every piece of that system had a function and was necessary depending on the patient’s needs,” he added. “And, at the end of the day, the components that were used were up to the doctors. This is a case about a company looking for a quick way out that decided to scapegoat the founder.”

Per the indictment, Perryman has officially been charged with “one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and health care fraud, which carries a maximum potential sentence of 20 years in prison, and one count of health care fraud, which carries a maximum potential sentence of ten years in prison.”

As the FBI notes in the indictment, these are still only accusations, and Perryman has yet to go to trial.

“Laura looks forwarded to addressing these allegations in court,” Dwyer told Futurism.

But given the evidence, things aren’t looking great for her. Besides, you involve Joe Montana in your scam, and you involve the fury of the American public.

“Our Office will continue to do everything in its power to bring to justice anyone responsible for perpetuating health care fraud,” said Williams, “which in this case led to patients being used as nothing more than tools for financial enrichment.”

Mississippi man loses nearly 400 pounds to improve health, keeping promise to grandma: ‘She would be so proud’

A man in Mississippi is inspiring others with his near-400-pound weight loss transformation.

Nicholas Craft, 42, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, weighed 649 pounds in June 2019, and now he’s down more than 365 pounds.

“I’ve been dealing with my weight since childhood,” Craft told Fox News Digital on Thursday, March 9. “I was 300 pounds in high school,”

Craft said depression led him to overeat, and overeating made him withdraw from society, which contributed to his sedentary lifestyle.

Nicholas Craft told Fox News Digital he sometimes had a hard time fitting in vehicles before his weight loss. (Nicholas Craft)

“My weight stopped me from going to family events and traveling,” he recalled. “I couldn’t get into regular vehicles. It was hard for me to get around. I had knee pain, body aches and shortness of breath.”

In 2019, a doctor reportedly told Craft that his weight was “a ticking time bomb” for his 5-foot-9 frame.

Craft said that comment made him realize he had to change his ways.

“I wanted to live longer,” he said.

Craft told Fox News Digital he didn’t go on a specialized weight loss diet. He simply switched the way he ate and how he approached food, which includes calorie counting and giving up junk food.

“My calorie intake was 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day when I first started,” he said.

Craft said he’s cut out sodas, fried foods, bread, pasta, rice and other carbs, and now he incorporates a lot of fruits, vegetables and protein.

In terms of exercise, Craft said he strength trains with dumbbells and moves around a lot throughout the day.

Craft also credits his grandmother, Georgia Moody, for his weight loss success. He said he appreciates the encouragement and support she provided him before her death in 2019.

“My grandmother passed away before she was able to see my weight loss transformation,” Craft said. “She wanted to see me more often. I promised her I would lose weight, so I could see her more.”

Craft only wishes she could see him now.

“She would be so proud of me,” Craft said. “She was my source of motivation.”

Since making that promise, Craft experiences less physical pain, his breathing has improved, he has more energy, more confidence and he no longer has trouble fitting in different vehicles for travel, he said.

He said he doesn’t feel tempted by “bad food” anymore and has his cravings under control.

Craft’s drastic weight loss story comes at a time when some Americans are attempting to shed pounds with semaglutide injections such as Wegovy and Ozempic, which is manufactured by Danish pharmaceutical Novo Nordisk.

Wegovy is a weight loss prescription while Ozempic is a diabetes prescription. Both brands have been used as fast-acting weight loss treatments by the masses after receiving celebrity endorsements.

Reports of Ozempic shortages began in December 2022 and the diabetes drug appears to still be in short supply due to high demand, which has created challenges for overweight and obese patients with a diabetes diagnosis.

Craft told Fox News Digital he no longer sees the doctor who called his weight “a ticking time bomb,” but his new doctor is impressed by his progress.

“My current doctor says it’s unbelievable how much I’ve lost,” Craft said.

After losing hundreds of pounds, the main challenge that Craft said he’s facing now is loose skin and he’s hoping he can find a doctor to surgically remove it because the excess tissue causes discomfort.

He said his health insurance has declined to cover the cost of skin removal surgery.

Nicholas Craft's four-year weight loss journey is ongoing. He told Fox News Digital he promised his late grandmother that he would lose weight.

Multiple plastic surgeons on RealSelf, a healthcare marketplace focused on consumer aesthetic treatments, have noted that most insurance companies reject covering skin removal surgeries because they deem them a cosmetic procedure. Gooh Groceries will provide healthy foods and affordable living in summer 2023

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -Fruits, vegetables and affordable living. Two co-owners are turning a former strip club into a grocery store in one of Madison’s food desert areas.

Friends Jerreh Kujabi and Batch Samba plan to open Gooh Groceries on East Washington Avenue — an area deemed a food desert, which lacks access to healthy food options. The upstairs of the store will become apartment units.

“There’s not just the food shortage in the neighborhood but also housing which is a bigger problem, not just here but in the entire city of Madison,” Kujabi said.

They bought the property, which was a former strip club, in 2021.

Besides a Kwik Trip, the nearest grocery store for residents on East Washington Avenue is a Hy-Vee which is nearly a mile away. This can be a difficult journey for people without cars because they would have to pass through major intersections.

“Most of them are low-income folks. They have challenges with transportation,” Kujabi said. “You can imagine having a single-family living in this neighborhood having two kids to cross East Washington to Hy-Vee and you have your groceries with a vehicle in the process.”

He says finding affordable housing is another issue in Madison.

“We are making major renovations there right now to turn those units into apartments so there would be a grocery store on the main level and the upstairs will be residential,” he said.

Through this journey. The duo found construction workers who understood their goals. Findorff Project Manager Cory Hansen says he enjoys working with Kujabi and Samba.

“They care about their community. they want to turn this building from its lighted past to something that is good for the community,” Hansen said.

As the project unfolded—Findorff Special Project Supervisor Brandon Johnson found remnants of the past, the building began as a casino.

“My favorite part of the project is the terrazzo floors that we discovered,” Johnson said. “We have them protected and covered but they are absolutely stunning. They were completely covered up and you would have no idea they were there.”

Kujabi says there is a high presence of West Africans and Hmong people. He says the store will be a regular grocery store with options that will make people feel at home.

“We’ll be carrying food stuff from different parts of Africa and also cater to the community that is here. it’s going to be mix,” Kujabi said. “You can pretty much find anything when you come here when we open.”

They are planning to finish construction by the spring to open by early summer.

Research literacy bridges the medical mistrust gap

A extended inglorious background of clinical racism and mistreatment has dire overall health penalties. Think about the atrocities linked with experimentation on African Us citizens without informed consent in the course of the Tuskegee Syphilis Research (1932-1972), which eroded the believe in in the health-related profession and healthcare exploration, and undermined the nation’s ability to obtain wellbeing fairness.

Professional medical mistrust proceeds to worsen because of to the detrimental wellbeing treatment ordeals African Us residents nonetheless endure today. For example, for the duration of the first rollout of the coronavirus vaccine, some African Individuals cited weak procedure by professional medical providers and well being care institutions as a purpose not to get vaccinated. This menace to vaccine equity is disturbing, offered that African Americans and other men and women of colour continue to be at an amplified possibility for COVID-19 infection, hospitalization, and loss of life.

This extensive legacy of structural racism and healthcare mistrust threatens the nation’s means to ensure that African Americans advantage from health care breakthroughs in analysis and obtain novel prevention or therapy modalities.

The mistreatment of African Americans within the professional medical program, compounded by the deficiency of basic investigate know-how, allows gas considerably of this distrust. A essential part to developing and sustaining health-related trust and addressing inequities is guaranteeing better analysis literacy among the African People in america. As wellbeing care pros with skills in wellness care and well being communications, we have furnished credible wellness info to clients and people. For the reason that of our proximity to patients, we have witnessed firsthand the perils of remaining misinformed or uninformed about wellbeing-associated issues, together with professional medical exploration.

Although it is really hard to know what percentage of African People are analysis literate, we know that weak personal overall health literacy can perpetuate wellbeing disparities and bad overall health outcomes. Some men and women with decreased health literacy are at an greater possibility of not becoming equipped to navigate the wellbeing care procedure, connect correctly with providers or adhere to health care suggestions. Low well being literacy can also influence an individual’s means to fully grasp the exploration process or make an knowledgeable selection irrespective of whether to take part or not participate in any study.

To complicate matters even more, while Black People in america have some confidence in experts, in one examine as lots of as 61 per cent of respondents noted getting anxious about exploration misconduct and accountability. This lack of trust and self confidence in research accountability, along with insufficient exploration literacy results in the fantastic storm for the ongoing absence of illustration by traditionally marginalized folks in scientific analysis and ongoing COVID vaccination initiatives.

Knowing the heritage of health-related mistreatment is even now a key component of healthcare distrust but can serve as a barrier to development. The concentrate needs to shift to ways researchers stop any exploration misconduct and make certain the defense of all human subjects.

Small gains in investigation literacy are being produced with systems this kind of as All of Us from the Nationwide Institutes of Well being, which performs to develop a database of health knowledge from a diverse team of individuals to speed up research and investigate participation. What makes the method special is that participants have total access to the data they share and know about all the tasks that use this knowledge.

Some African Americans discover about research by taking part in local community-based participatory analysis assignments or serving as science citizens for investigation companies or as research team associates. This is a excellent start out, but researchers and stakeholders must do more to assure analysis literacy and transparency.

Any effort to reinforce research literacy should take into account these and other things identified to influence an individual’s means to obtain, understand, and use all types of overall health information and facts. As advocates simply call for enhanced health and fitness literacy, we will need a sturdy target on analysis literacy now and over and above the COVID-19 crisis.

The lack of a strong foundation of study literacy compromises Black Americans’ skill to make sound health conclusions about issues like exploration participation and other wellness problems.

To tackle this urgent problem, scientists and analysis businesses ought to give options for African Americans to study about investigate just before initiating recruitment attempts. This could be a ingredient of health and fitness-connected community outreach endeavors doing the job to access this population. Proposals for exploration funding should include things like ways to improve analysis literacy as correct. This sort of attempts really should include things like a aim on the progress in the defense of human topics. These improvements include things like a more robust emphasis on transparency via educated consent, greater investigator oversight and accountability, and much more stringent polices. This is specifically crucial for members of the African American local community who are influenced by prior study cruelties.

Investigate literacy could enable assistance the final decision-creating process of African People by dispelling the myths involved with the present vaccine rollout and furnishing much more assurances pertaining to the rigors connected with drug enhancement and other scientific breakthroughs. New initiatives to advance investigate from this perspective are critical to disrupting the cycle of underrepresentation of African People in america in medical analysis and increasing the utilization of scientific breakthroughs by these most in need.

Ensuring exploration literacy is a ought to for attaining wellness fairness. Anything at all a lot less has the probable to perpetuate the ongoing health and fitness disparities and wellbeing inequities that have plagued communities of shade for generations.
