How to shop for an emergency kit

By using online guidance from reputable resources like FEMA’s Ready.gov and The American Red Cross, you can get a good idea of what to look for in a survival kit, or even how to make one yourself. Below are some of the most common questions people ask when shopping for an emergency kit.

What do you need for a 72-hour emergency kit?

FEMA’s Ready.gov and the American Red Cross recommend a lot of the same items for an emergency kit. As explained above, we combined their recommendations to form a list of basics recommended for any emergency kit.

Both organizations also list additional and supplemental emergency supplies that may be useful depending on your individual needs, including:

  1. Prescription medications (3-day supply) and medical items
  2. Non-prescription medications such as pain relievers, anti-diarrhea, antacids or laxatives
  3. Prescription eyeglasses and contact lens solution
  4. Infant supplies
  5. Pet food and water
  6. Extra cash
  7. Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies)
  8. Sleeping bags
  9. Towels
  10. Climate appropriate change of clothes and shoes
  11. Work gloves
  12. Scissors
  13. Fire extinguishers
  14. Feminine supplies
  15. Mess kit
  16. Paper and pencils
  17. Entertainment items (books, games, puzzles, etc.)

Is it cheaper to build your own emergency kit?

Most of the time, yes. A lot of the most recommended items in an emergency kit are things you already have in your home: non-perishable food, water, batteries, tools, spare clothes, first-aid supplies, etc. By putting together supplies you already have in a bag you already own, you can build most of your emergency kit yourself, and shop for missing items individually.

Where should I store my emergency kit?

Ready.gov recommends storing your emergency kit in “one or two easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or a duffel bag.” It also recommends storing items in airtight plastic bags. Some premade emergency kits come in waterproof bags, like the JUDY Mover Max.

Getting supplies here, there, everywhere > Robins Air Force Base > Article Display

When Senior Airmen Sabrina Ocampo and Kyle Rogers walk into the 78th Medical Group clinic at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia clinic, the excitement of their customer’s is almost comparable to kids seeing Santa Claus.

Though not dressed in red, but instead wearing their camouflage uniforms of the day, the pair travels with a cart piled with a variety of medical supplies.

Ocampo and Rogers are 78th Medical Logistics Flight technicians, which is connected to the 78th Healthcare Operations Squadron.

“The smiles and ‘YAYs’ brighten my day,” said Rogers. “Customer satisfaction is important. It gives me a sense of accomplishment, because I know I’m providing a service for something bigger.

“Our squadron is vital to the 78th Medical Group’s mission,” continued Rogers. “Without us, it can jeopardize the entire medical group getting critical supplies to treat Airmen. So our jobs are very critical.”

The medical logistics’ warehouse is the place to get all things medical and even non-medical supplies for the installation.

“It’s the foundation for the 78th Medical Group clinic,” said Capt. Victor Johnson, 78th HCOS Medical Logistics flight commander. “Without medical logistics, you can’t do anything else. We order the supplies for the doctors, nurses and technicians, and we also calibrate medical and dental equipment.”

“Whatever it takes” is the mission and mindset of these Airmen commonly known as “Log Dogs”.

“I like that we can work at our own pace,” said Ocampo. “We never know what to expect because it all depends on what is being delivered. On some days, it can be a lot and on other days a little.”

Medical logistics is also responsible for ensuring deploying medical teams have everything they need to establish clinics stateside or abroad.

“We work with a variety of vendors to secure medical prescriptions and supplies,” said Master Sgt. Nadia Wolf, 78th HCOS Medical Logistics flight chief. “We are also responsible for ordering items like stethoscopes, dental chairs, MRI machines and any tools used for patient care. If it is something that belongs in a medical treatment facility, we order it.”

Their work is centered around: Contracting, facility management, supply chain management,

storage and distribution, medical materiel quality control, medical assemblage, management/war reserve materiel, inventory/property management

The logistics flight is also responsible for war reserve material. Those are deployable packages containing a variety of medical supplies for the wing and deployed when called upon.

“What I like most about working in logistics is that there are so many diverse sections,” said Rogers. “I have really enjoyed learning how the entire process works on purchasing, delivering and everything in between. But the greatest thing is helping provide for the entire medical group, which is helping my fellow Airmen.”

Protecting America’s Medical Supplies is a Bipartisan National Security Priority

The us is beholden to individuals who supply us. Institutions from the navy to hospitals depend on imports from a broad assortment of nations, and not all of them are welcoming. Relying on non-allied international locations for significant merchandise tends to make us vulnerable. We can only make improvements to that reality with bipartisan collaboration it is really what introduced a Tennessee Republican and a Democrat from California with each other.

The pandemic showed us how tough and gradual it is to reorganize complex intercontinental provide chains. Think about how substantially even worse the circumstance would be in the course of an armed conflict, and you are going to get started to comprehend our newest nationwide security disaster.

The reasons for the crisis aren’t sophisticated. Like any other purchaser, the United States governing administration seems to be for the most stable, most affordable-value suppliers. Sad to say, this has established an overreliance on goods like medical materials produced in nations, mainly China, that could weaponize the incredibly offer chains that sustain us.

The escalating stress in between the United States and China has introduced that vulnerability into sharp aid. If Americans’ accessibility to critical clinical and pharmaceutical supplies were abruptly interrupted, our countrywide stability would be in serious jeopardy.

The United States will have to fortify its existence sciences provide chain by shifting it to nations with whom we share far more amicable relations and strategic alignment. This method will entail turning diplomatic achievement into solid financial associations, and a promising possibility has just lately opened up.

Brokered by the United States, the Abraham Accords recognized peaceful associations involving our strong ally, Israel, and a variety of Arab states in the Center East and North Africa. Health care innovation and financial development have adopted scorching on the heels of these watershed agreements, and we are well positioned to notice the added benefits as effectively.

If The usa pursues this bipartisan friendshoring option, the initially stage would entail the establishment of an Fda bureau in the Middle East. By generating a staging ground there, we diversify our offshore professional medical and lifetime sciences supply chain although shifting our dependence absent from China.

The two Israel and the United Arab Emirates have strong biopharmaceutical industries that make them natural allies in the United States’ quest to safeguard its entry to crucial health-related products that are now predominantly created in China.

These allies also boast reducing-edge health-related engineering, investigate, and enhancement. With the Food and drug administration in their community to expedite regulatory assessments and partnerships, People would appreciate expanded accessibility to lifesaving medical systems whilst accelerating pioneering health care and biomedical technologies.

It would also direct to the producing of higher-demand health care products for sale in the U.S. like biopharmaceuticals, clinical gadgets, diagnostics, and nutraceuticals.

We need to have to get started this course of action as quickly as achievable, due to the fact we have a large hill to climb.

As of now, lively pharmaceutical ingredients imported from China comprise about 90 {bf0515afdcaddba073662ceb89fbb62b6b1bf123143c0e06b788e1946e8c353f} of the American offer of lifetime-preserving antibiotics like penicillin, azithromycin and cephalosporins. It should also be famous that in 2019, China was liable for 95 {bf0515afdcaddba073662ceb89fbb62b6b1bf123143c0e06b788e1946e8c353f} of the United States’ imports of ibuprofen, 91 p.c of hydrocortisone, 70 percent of acetaminophen, 40–45 {bf0515afdcaddba073662ceb89fbb62b6b1bf123143c0e06b788e1946e8c353f} of penicillin, and 40 {bf0515afdcaddba073662ceb89fbb62b6b1bf123143c0e06b788e1946e8c353f} of heparin.

That similar yr, a report by an Food and drug administration-commissioned task drive claimed that drug shortages are a persistent trouble and are hard to resolve, often long lasting for decades.

A main obstacle is that we have no in depth list of every single biopharmaceutical product created in China and imported by the U.S. The suspicious absence of this essential record begs the thoughts: Who is hiding what, and why? Whose accountability is it to sustain accountability for this crucial source chain inventory?

If China have been to inflict even a small stoppage on the United States, the American population and armed forces would locate by themselves acutely susceptible and unprepared.

Friendshoring some of our pharmaceutical requirements to the Abraham Accords international locations, like Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco, will make America safer.

Mass General Brigham selects Medline as strategic vendor for medical supplies

Medline selected by leading integrated academic healthcare system for prime vendor agreement

NORTHFIELD, Ill., Feb. 27, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Medline and premier Massachusetts-based Mass General Brigham have entered into a multi-year prime vendor agreement. After being with a previous vendor for over 25 years, Medline will now be the exclusive provider of medical and surgical supplies across the integrated academic healthcare system’s continuum of care, including the system’s acute care facilities and network for ambulatory surgery centers and physician offices.

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mass General Brigham tapped Medline to augment the health system’s storage capacity with third-party logistics (3PL) solutions enabled by Medline’s state-of-the-art 840,000 sq. ft. Uxbridge, Mass. distribution center. With the expansion of the strategic relationship, in addition to 3PL solutions, Mass General Brigham will also leverage Medline’s supply chain optimization and logistical expertise to advance its supply chain operations and resiliency efforts.

“Working with Medline allows us to leverage their entire scope of expertise in the areas of supply chain logistics and clinical solutions to ultimately help improve our operating performance,” said Lisa Scannell, vice president of supply chain for Mass General Brigham. “We look forward to evolving this strategic relationship to achieve greater resiliency and standardization in our system’s supply chain.”

As part of the agreement, on-site Medline analysts will work hand-in-hand with leaders to address specific caregiver needs and help drive new ways of optimizing care in a commitment to providing enhanced support and service. In addition, Mass General Brigham will have the ability to easily monitor key metrics such as item utilization, contract compliance, price accuracy, and spend by product categories through Medline’s advanced analytics platforms.

“We are honored to expand our business relationship with Mass General Brigham and are committed to becoming an extension of their team, going to great lengths to understand the system’s needs,” said Jim Digiacomo, executive account director for Medline. “Combining their mission to serve the community with Medline’s agility and scale, this partnership will enable us to create customized solutions to help healthcare run better.”
