Horizon Fitness 7.0 AT Treadmill

You don’t need to spend well over $1,000 to get a smooth belt to run on indoors. This treadmill, which costs just under that four-digit mark, makes for a comfortable workout, as it’s surprisingly steady and won’t bounce even if you work your way up to the top speed of 12 mph. The quick-dial handles are one of our favorite features, as they make for easy, fast adjustments on speed and/or incline. Those quick transitions allow you to keep up with interval or progression workouts. And you can go as steep as 15 percent when you really want to nail hill training.

For those who love app-based workouts, this treadmill easily connects to your go-to platforms, like Peloton, via your iPad or Android tablet, and Bluetooth connectivity that allows you to press play and stream the workout through the machine’s speakers.

Research shows that moving more—and more frequently—throughout the day is key to health and longevity. So if you’re someone who works at a desk most of the day and, therefore, spends most of your time in a chair and hunched over a computer, it’s time to get more steps in with this treadmill that fits right under your desk.

With it, you can ramp up your step count as you virtually attend meetings or read through emails. The beauty of this belt, in particular: It weighs just 59 pounds (lighter than many others), and it offers a foldable handrail and wheels for easy transportation and storage. The motor is also relatively quiet, so you won’t disturb your neighbors if you’re in an apartment building. One caveat is that it’s designed more for walking than intense running, so consider it your ticket to taking more steps, but not necessarily improving your speed.

Best Connected Strength Device

Peloton Guide

If you already love Peloton’s tread or bike workouts but want to focus on strength training, the Guide is for you. The device itself has a built-in camera for “self-mode,” allowing you to see your form on screen and compare it to the trainer’s as you move through a workout. It also has a “movement tracker” that not only gives you credit for your strength moves but also monitors the body parts you work out the most so it can suggest routines for the muscles you tend to neglect. (For example, if you’re consistently doing tread runs and leg workouts, it’ll suggest core and upper-body sessions.)

The Guide also has a “rep tracking” feature to record your strength volume—a key to avoiding a workout plateau. You can also enter your weights for each workout and it stores that info, helping you keep a close eye on your progress.

The best part about Guide is how easy it makes following a well-rounded strength program. You can choose to follow specific weeks-long programs, like coach Tunde Oyeneyin’s four-week arm-focused workouts or the four-week floor boot camp program from Selena Samuela and Jess Sims. Or hit play on the “roll call” schedule. This offers up your strength workouts for the week, mixing total-body, upper-body, lower-body, and core sequences, giving you a mix of moves that can all be done in 30 minutes or less.

To top it off, Peloton seamlessly connects to Apple Watch (and other heart-rate monitors), so you can see your heart rate throughout class. Plus, get a “strive score,” based on the time you spend in each heart-rate zone.

Lululemon Studio

Lululemon Studio brings a group fitness atmosphere right to your home. Formerly known as Mirror (Lululemon purchased the system in the summer of 2020 and rebranded it in October 2022), the device itself looks discreet when you’re not using it. It’s just a full-length mirror that you can lean anywhere or mount on the wall.

When it’s time to kick off your workout, which you launch in the corresponding app, the instructor appears on-screen to lead you through the class. To make that experience of following an instructor even more studio-like, Lululemon teamed up with big-name brands like Pure Barre, Rumble, and Y7 to offer their workouts on the platform. So if you’ve missed going to boutique studios or always wanted to try these popular classes, Lululemon Studio is a great way to do it.

The best thing about this studio approach is that you get the enthusiasm and expertise of instructors in different training modalities, which makes workouts more exciting (and challenging, especially if you’re new to the particular type of training). Plus, it gives you an easy and motivating way to add variety to your routine, keeping a fitness program from getting boring, and many options to reinvigorate your dedication to movement.

What’s more, you can take classes of various lengths from the studio partners (which you wouldn’t get in person) so you can easily sweat it out between meetings or to-dos with a 10- or 20-minute sweat session.

Bonus points for those who love Lululemon gear and have access to in-person classes: A Lululemon Studio membership comes with a discount to shop the store, plus a discount to take classes IRL from their studio partners.

Lululemon The Workout Mat

Lululemon’s yoga mats offer a soft feel yet grippy texture so you stay comfortable while sticking poses. The company recently launched the latest edition to its lineup, simply named The Workout Mat, which improves upon a top-notch product.

Designed for more intensity and dynamic movements—like explosive plyometric exercises and side-to-side movement patterns—the mat feels super plush underfoot, but still offers traction so you’re not sliding around with each step. Six millimeters thick, it’s also great for stretches that require more support (like kneeling hip-flexor stretches), exercises that require a little padding (like forearm planks), and strength moves where you need to feel the ground beneath your feet (basically any weighted movement). While the price tag might seem hefty, it’s worth it for a comfortable, safe space for all your workouts.

It’s easy to forget the crucial role recovery plays in your training plan, but it’s a requirement for seeing progress, building strength, and sidestepping injury. These tools make that rejuvenation process more exciting, giving your body support through rest days.

Normatec is a go-to for compression therapy—a tool for giving the legs an air massage before and after long, hard miles. But because the typical full-length sleeves take up the entire leg, and include a pretty hefty hose attachment to pump air into the sleeves, they’re difficult to take anywhere. These calf sleeves, however, offer a much more travel-friendly option. Equipped with rechargeable battery packs to power the airflow, the sleeves offer targeted compression straight to the calves. Seven levels of that compression mean you can get a more intense (we mean, quite intense) 360-degree massage on the lower legs whenever you need it.

wearables

Readiness scores and recovery feedback are trending on wearables right now—and they can be super helpful for runners. As active individuals, we tend to push our bodies’ limits in workouts and need adequate rest to keep seeing performance improvements.

Two major measurements come into play when tracking recovery: resting heart rate (RHR, which is as straightforward as it sounds—your heart rate when you’re at rest) and heart rate variability (HRV, which measures the time between beats).

grouping of wearable tech

Trevor Raab

A higher HRV typically means lower stimulation of your fight-or-flight response (that’s your stress response when the heart starts pounding and you feel flushed) and better activation of the rest or digest state, or your more relaxed mode, explains Tamanna Singh, M.D., a sports cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic. Things like sleep, alcohol, food, and training can affect both RHR and HRV. While it’s a positive to have a higher HRV, relative to you as an individual, the goal really is stability over time, says Erica Marshall, Ph.D., C.S.C.S., assistant professor of exercise science at Florida Southern College.

Both Singh and Marshall agree that devices can help you spot trends in your RHR and HRV, giving insight into variables that affect these numbers and what to pay more attention to so you get healthier and fitter. For example, they might clue you into the need for better sleep habits, more rest days, or fewer cocktails.

Above all, it’s important to listen to your body over a device. But if your tracker tells you it’s time for a recovery day, it’s also a good reminder to check in with yourself—because maybe you could, indeed, use more time to relax.

It’s nice to have a tracker that doesn’t take up more space on your wrists, and one that stands out for putting rest first. In the corresponding app, you’ll see readiness, sleep, and activity scores. Readiness comes based on RHR, HRV balance, body temperature, recovery index, sleep, and the previous day’s activity. Thanks to that temperature integration, the ring can indicate when you’re sick or just run down, reminding you to take extra rest.

Sleep stats not only include REM and deep sleep, but also how long it takes you to fall asleep, time spent asleep versus awake in bed, suggested bedtime, and the number of times you wake up or move in the night. While the Ring reveals calories burned and steps taken, the more eye-opening stat is inactivity for the day and whether you should move more every hour.

nutrition
grouping of foods

Trevor Raab

Your body needs carbohydrates to stay running strong, so Lori Russell, RDN, suggests aiming for about 60 grams of carbs one to two hours before your workout. If you have more time, it’s smart to add in protein and fat to keep you full, but watch your fiber intake before you hit the road, she says.

After you’re done clocking miles, go for that 3:1 carb-to-protein ratio, along with fat and fiber, to aid in recovery. “Runners need to follow general healthful eating rules just like everyone else. So aim to choose ingredients you recognize, stay away from items that seem sketchy or too removed from their whole source, and hard-to-process compounds, like sugar alcohols,” Russell adds. The best prepackaged items will have whole food ingredients like nuts, fruits, oats, and more—including the choices here.

When it comes to staying hydrated and maintaining an electrolyte balance, Russell says the most important thing to pay attention to is sodium. Aim for about 300 to 500 milligrams per hour during exercise, particularly if you’re going long.

How nutrition tracking can help you meet your fitness goals

When you initial get started performing out continually, it is not unusual to go by means of a period of apparent modifications followed by a unexpected plateau exactly where development appears to be to slam to a halt. It is really prevalent, but if you want to get over that irritating stage, having be aware of your calorie and dietary ingestion can assist.

When I hit my plateau, I put in a 7 days monitoring what I ate and found out that, no matter of how wholesome my diet was, I was having more than enough to sustain two males. Tracking provided the info I necessary to make improved selections, which allowed me to get pleasure from regular progress.

No matter if your fitness objective is excess fat loss or muscle mass gain, nourishment monitoring is uncomplicated, and you can rely on various tools to make the greatest of your journey.

How the body burns fat and gains muscle

You require a precise variety of calories to operate and if you hit it each individual day, your overall body will continue to be precisely the exact in conditions of muscle and extra fat. This variety is regarded as your routine maintenance caloric intake, and it depends on parameters like your peak, pounds, genetics, and every day exercise levels. Grownup adult males will usually fall someplace in between 2,000 and 3,000 calories, says the US Division of Agriculture, while gals typically need amongst 1,600 and 2,400.

[Related: There are only two supplements proven to help you build muscle]

If you’re performing exercises consistently and vigorously, your human body will only be capable to construct muscle if you give it more than enough extra electricity to do so. This means consuming additional calories than your upkeep amount, which will final result in a caloric surplus. (If you want to dig deeper into how to get buff, we have a full beginner’s guideline on how to get these muscle gains.) To reduce unwanted fat, you require to go in the reverse route and intention for a caloric deficit, which entails eating much less energy than your routine maintenance amount. To get pleasure from regular and protected development, industry experts advocate that your surplus or deficit be about 500 calories.

Being aware of your goals and comprehension how to get there will make it easier to use nutritional monitoring to your edge.

How to observe energy (extra or much less) properly

Men and women utilised to count energy with pen and paper, but the good news is these times we have nifty applications that make the course of action significantly far more convenient. On the net platforms like Calculator.net’s Calorie calculator use aspects like your age, peak, excess weight, and day-to-day exercise ranges to present your servicing price as properly as some common parameters for muscle mass get and pounds decline. When you have those people quantities, you basically tally up the caloric content of the foods you take in on a every day basis and regulate your eating plan according to your physical fitness aims. If you want to have one thing on your cell phone, applications like MyPlate (offered for Android and iOS) and MyFitnessPal (offered for Android and iOS) can be valuable. These applications will figure out your approximate routine maintenance level and set a caloric funds for you.

Hold in brain that no subject the application or strategy you use, the numbers you see in these resources are only approximations. The formulation these platforms use to estimate quantities like your maintenance level, for example, are based mostly on basic figures that go away minimal space for individuality, and may well not take into account factors that make your human body unique from the norm. This also applies to the apps’ large database of food stuff information, as the caloric price you see on labels and packaging can be up to 20 p.c inaccurate, says the US Meals and Drug Administration, so be mindful not to get far too hooked up to the specific variety.

And then there is the body’s ability to take up only a portion of the readily available energy, which may be everything concerning 20 and 90 per cent, claims Michael S. Parker, a licensed exercise diet professional and founder of Forge Exercise. This is mainly because our bodies just really don’t digest the calories of some meals as properly as other folks.

In its place of making an attempt to make these numbers healthy completely, Parker recommends utilizing calorie monitoring as a rough established of recommendations to assistance you study about the power worth in a variety of foodstuff and how significantly you’re really feeding on. From there you can end monitoring and make wise eating decisions when you are hungry.

Likely beyond energy

The typical health and fitness noob doesn’t want to know a great deal beyond the ideas of surplus, routine maintenance, and deficit. But as you get more really serious about performing exercises, you may possibly benefit from tracking macronutrients, also acknowledged just as macros. These account for the three most significant nutrient types and Parker clarifies that each of them has a position: Protein is vital for building muscle mass, although carbohydrates support in functionality, and dietary body fat will help with hormone regulation and other important bodily capabilities.

How much of each individual macro you must consume is dependent on variables like your basal metabolic amount, intercourse, age, and excess weight. But for muscle making, the International Culture of Sporting activities Nourishment recommends consuming 1.4 to 2 grams of protein for each kilogram of physique body weight for each day. They also advocate 4 to 7 grams for each kilo for every day of carbs for fat education athletes to improve power performance and muscle making. You really should devote the relaxation of your day-to-day calorie funds to nutritional extra fat. Nutrition monitoring applications can check your macros and do all the math for you, so you can tackle a number of objectives at the exact time. For illustration, you’ll be ready to prioritize protein to sustain muscle mass mass while leaving more than enough of a deficit in your calorie spending plan to help excess fat burning.

Health and fitness and protection are additional essential than any health goal

You should under no circumstances use overuse caloric deficit in an endeavor to reduce bodyweight a lot quicker. Losing fat—and maintaining it off—is most secure and most helpful when you do it step by step. A deficit of all-around 500 calories a working day will burn off excess fat at a fee of up to one pound for each week, which exploration exhibits is a protected and sustainable speed.

But counting energy is a slippery slope and people who hyper-fixate on recording all the things they eat operate the threat of establishing having ailments.

“Tracking nutrition can conveniently flip into anything that is unhealthy,” claims Katherine Metzelaar, a registered dietitian and founder of Bravespace Diet, an corporation that can help patients get better from ingesting conditions and worries relating to body impression. “I would not propose another person observe [their food] if they have a record of dieting, disordered feeding on, or an eating dysfunction.”

She explains that getting food monitoring choose up a lot of headspace is a apparent warning sign, specifically if that stops you from heading to restaurants or ingesting at your mates or family’s household. Other purple flags include things like feelings of panic when you can’t keep track of your meals, guilt close to what you’ve eaten, limiting foods simply because you have met your calorie price range, and not remaining able to be spontaneous with foods.

[Related: Anorexia may be more complicated than we thought]

But when carried out securely, meals monitoring can supply beneficial perception into your body’s nutrition which will be helpful to continue on producing fitness development. So Metzelaar is adamant about recommending approaching this process cautiously and monitoring your food stuff for no more than a few times at a time.

“That is plenty of details to use in buy to see what food items could possibly be lacking and in which there are locations to improve upon,” she says.

When you’ve acquired the details you require, mirror on how your having habits mesh with your exercise targets. If you’re experiencing unhealthy behaviors, prioritize using treatment of oneself and seek assistance if you want it.

Keep in brain that in your conditioning journey, you are not likely to see variations right away. Creating muscle and getting rid of fats is the final result of introducing healthier consuming and exercise patterns into your lifestyle on a sustainable foundation. Monitoring your diet is surely not a silver bullet alternative, but it can enable set you on the route to that sustainability.

As a cyclist, bettering performance certainly involves time on the bike. But that’s not the only way to see gains. Cross-training, recovery, and fuel all contribute to stronger rides. Let these editor-tested top fitness and food choices feed your muscles and your miles, whether you’re lifting weights, clocking intervals, building endurance, or taking crucial downtime.

The main goal of a home-gym setup: inspire you to move more. This list will help you lift, stretch, and kick up your cardio right in your own space. Each product makes training indoors a little easier and way more fun. So you keep moving even if you can’t ride outside.

When doing squats, deadlifts, glute bridges, and even upper-body exercises, it’s important to feel the ground beneath you—pushing through your feet as you come to the top of the movement or grounding down for balance. These training shoes let you do just that. They feel pretty minimal underfoot. But that’s not a bad thing, as it lets you feel that ground contact. They also have lots of flexibility in the forefoot if you add plyometrics, like box jumps or skaters, into your routine. And the BOA closure allows for a tight but not restrictive fit.

Shimano IC501

The Shimano IC501’s almost sock-like construction makes it a standout in terms of comfort. It’s the breathable mesh upper that gives it that stretchy, fitted-to-your-foot feel. The material also means you get superior airflow, keeping your feet cool even as you heat up throughout your workout. While the bottom of the IC501 is a little more flexible than other shoes, the reinforced plate throughout the shoe’s length still allows for efficiency and power as you press and pull through each part of your pedal stroke.

If your budget doesn’t allow for a dedicated indoor bike over $1,000, this is a great substitute. You can connect to the Peloton app, as well as Zwift, via Bluetooth so you can see your workouts on screen. It also tracks and displays your time, speed, mileage, heart rate (if you connect a monitor), and resistance. While you won’t get wattage or precise rpm, you can see that data on third-party apps. The ride is smooth, the construction allows for adjustability to fit your body, you can crank up the resistance, and you have the option to ride with shoes in cages or clip in with SPD-style cleats.

Best Inexpensive Zwift Setup

To get in on the fun of Zwift’s immersive experience, you don’t need to spend a lot of money on your setup. All you need are these two less-expensive tools that make tracking your workouts super simple and help you improve your speed and power.

To get everything working properly, first attach the Garmin sensor to your bike’s rear hub. Then just connect that sensor to Zwift, enter your tire size, add your trainer, and you’re good to go. This will input your speed and watts into Zwift so you can race the competition.

Zwift Hub

Hub

Best Indoor Smart Trainer

Zwift Hub

One of the least expensive smart trainers you can buy that directly connects to Zwift, this direct-drive-style trainer not only measures power and transmits that information to the game, but also allows Zwift to adjust the resistance to simulate in-game terrain. This makes the experience of riding indoors more immersive. The Hub has +/– 2.5 percent power accuracy, 1,800 watts maximum, and up to 16 percent incline simulation, plus ANT+ and Bluetooth connectivity.

Unlike most other direct-drive trainers, the Hub comes preinstalled with a cassette, and riders can specify cassette compatibility for 8-speed through 12-speed systems. This decreases the overall cost and means you won’t need to source additional parts or get them installed. In other words, it makes the setup pretty smooth.

Zwift also sends color-coded thru-axle templates and cards that you can use to measure your bike’s rear dropouts and easily figure out which adapters are needed to fit your bike to the trainer.

As for the ride itself, it’s quite good. In terms of feel and inertia, it’s as solid as the pricier Wahoo Kickr Core. It’s also essentially silent. The only noise you’ll likely hear will be either your bike’s drivetrain or your fan.

Our main critique of the Hub is that it doesn’t fold up or have adjustable legs. But if you’re not tight on space and have pretty even floors, this is the most cost-effective way to get the full virtual training experience that Zwift and other apps offer.

Lululemon The Workout Mat

Lululemon makes the best yoga mats, offering a soft feel, yet grippy texture, so you stay comfortable while sticking poses. The company recently launched the latest addition to its lineup, simply named The Workout Mat, which improves upon an already stellar product.

Designed for more intense and dynamic movements—like explosive plyometric exercises and side-to-side movement patterns—the mat feels super plush underfoot but still offers traction so you’re not sliding around with each step. At six millimeters thick, it’s also great for stretches or other exercises requiring more support under your knees or elbows (think forearm planks or kneeling hip-flexor stretches). While the price might seem hefty, it’s worth it for a comfortable and safe space for your at-home workouts.

Adjustable dumbbells allow you to have a range of weights within hand’s reach without taking up tons of space. While many adjustable dumbbells are difficult to actually alter or have clanky weights, this set from NordicTrack makes it easy and smooth to switch from 10-pound dumbbells in a reverse fly to 35-pound for your deadlift.

Ranging from 5 pounds to 50 pounds each, a simple turn of its center knob gives you access to lighter or heavier weights. And if you don’t feel like turning the dial, you can connect these weights to devices like the Amazon Echo to let Alexa know you want them set at 10 pounds or ready for your squat weight (you just have to set your go-to weight for certain exercises in the app). With this set, it’s simple to keep progressing your load and making strength gains that pay off in injury prevention and enhanced power.

Lululemon Studio brings a group fitness atmosphere right to your home. Formerly known as the Mirror (Lululemon purchased the system in the summer of 2020 and rebranded it in October 2022), the device itself looks discreet when you’re not using it. It’s just a full-length mirror that you can stand anywhere or mount on the wall. When it’s time to kick off your workout session, the instructor appears on-screen, leading you through classes including strength, barre, boxing, and many more. Seeing the trainer makes for a studio-like experience, plus you can set the music genre for the class, leaving you with jams that motivate you the most.

In the fall, Lululemon Studio teamed up with fitness studios like Pure Barre, Rumble, and Y7 to offer their classes on the platform. And if you’ve missed going to boutique studios, or always wanted to try these popular classes, Lululemon Studio is a great way to do it. You get the enthusiasm and expertise of instructors in different training modalities, making workouts more exciting (and challenging if you’re new to the particular type of training). Plus, it gives you a pretty stellar way to add variety to your routine. This keeps a fitness program from getting boring because you have so many options for trying something new—and then you can keep going back to the classes you love most.

What’s more, for your motivation: You can take shorter classes from these studio partners (which you wouldn’t get in person) so you can easily sweat it out between meetings or to-dos. To top it off, Lululemon Studio comes with a discount to shop Lululemon, plus a discount to take classes from its studio partners IRL.

Peloton Guide

Best Connected Strength Device

Peloton Guide

If you already love Peloton’s cycling workouts but want to kick up your strength training, the Guide is for you. It’s also helpful for anyone looking to start a weight-training program that takes some of the guesswork out of planning efficient, effective workouts. The Guide has a built-in camera for “self-mode,” allowing you to see your form on-screen and compare it to the trainer’s form as you move through a workout. It also has a “Movement Tracker” that not only gives you credit for your strength moves but also keeps track of the body parts you work the most. That way, it can suggest routines for the muscles you tend to neglect. (For example, if you’re consistently cycling and doing leg workouts, it’ll suggest some core and upper-body sessions.)

The Peloton Guide also added a “Rep Tracking” feature to the Guide so you can keep track of your strength-training volume over time—a key to avoiding a workout plateau. Your weights for each workout are also stored for future tracking, helping you keep a closer eye on your progress.

The best part about using Guide is that it makes it easy to follow a well-rounded strength program. You can choose to follow specific weeks-long programs, like coach Tunde Oyeneyin’s four-week arm-focused workouts or the four-week floor boot camp program from Selena Samuela and Jess Sims. Or follow the “Roll Call” schedule. This offers up your strength workouts for the week, mixing total-body, upper-body, lower-body, and core sequences to provide a variety of moves that can all be done in 30 minutes or less. It makes your strength workouts as easy as firing up the Guide, pressing play on Roll Call, and following the daily workout.

To top it off, Peloton seamlessly connects to Apple Watch (and other heart-rate monitors), so you can see your heart rate throughout class. Plus, you get a “Strive Score,” calculated based on the time you spend in each heart-rate zone.

This compact percussion therapy device keeps up with the Theragun and Hyperices of the world but in a smaller (and arguably better-looking) package. It comes with four speeds and four attachments so you can find the right intensity for every area of the body. Turn it up to work out those quads; turn it down to go a little easier on your shoulders. The device also rings in a bit quieter than some of its rivals. Plus, it comes with a carrying case that makes it easy to stash in your bag and four color options.

Hyperice Normatec Go

Normatec is the go-to for compression therapy—a tool for giving the legs an air massage before and after long, hard miles. But because the typical full-length sleeves take up the entire leg, and include a pretty hefty hose attachment to feed the sleeves the air, they’re difficult to take anywhere. These calf sleeves, however, offer a much more travel-friendly option. Equipped with rechargeable battery packs that power the airflow, the sleeves offer targeted compression straight to the calves. Seven levels of that compression mean you can get a more intense 360-degree massage on the lower legs whenever you need it.

Costing about $20, the roller’s hard surface will help you find relief in the quads, glutes, hamstrings, and calves. And you can easily use it for the upper body, too. Lie on it vertically, with everything from your glutes to your head supported, and you can open up the chest. Feel a massage through the shoulders and back when you move your arms in a snow-angel-like motion. This move—and any way you roll—is the perfect way to stretch it out after a long ride.

Readiness scores and recovery feedback can be helpful for cyclists. As active individuals, we push our bodies’ limits in workouts and need adequate rest to see performance improvements.

Two measurements come into play when tracking recovery: resting heart rate (RHR) and heart-rate variability (HRV, the time between beats). A higher HRV typically means lower stimulation of your fight-or-flight response (your stress response) and better activation of the rest or digest state, or your more relaxed mode, explains Tamanna Singh, M.D., sports cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic. Things like sleep, alcohol, fueling, and training can affect both RHR and HRV. While it’s a positive to have a higher HRV, that’s relative to you as an individual. The goal is really stability over time, says Erica Marshall, Ph.D., C.S.C.S., assistant professor of exercise science at Florida Southern College.

Both Singh and Marshall agree that devices help you spot trends, providing insight into these numbers so you know where to focus to get healthier and fitter. For example, they might clue you into the need for better sleep habits, more rest days, or less alcohol.

Above all, listen to your body over depending on a device. But if your tracker tells you it’s time for a recovery day, it’s a good reminder to check in with yourself—because maybe you could use more time to relax.

In addition to top-level GPS accuracy for more precise stats like distance and pace, the Forerunner 255 also offers tons of training data on your wrist. You can see essential stats like heart-rate zones, aerobic versus anaerobic activity within a workout, and VO2-max estimates. It will also provide riding metrics from connected devices like power meters or e-bikes.

In terms of helping you with your recovery goals, you get a sleep score (which takes into account RHR and HRV), a “Recovery Time” metric (which estimates how much rest you need after every workout), and “Training Status” (peak, productive, unproductive, or maintaining), which may suggest when you need to swap out high-intensity activities for more low-key workouts.

The 255 Music easily pairs with many of your favorite indoor trainers, connects with popular streaming music services like Spotify, and has a nearly two-week battery life in smartwatch mode or 30 hours if using GPS.

Best Budget-Friendly Tracker

Fitbit Inspire 3

Fitbit’s platform is very user-friendly, making it easy to see your stats, track your workouts, and get insight into your movement and recovery. The Inspire 3, in particular, discreetly tracks your everyday activity, thanks to its slim, sleek design. Its standout features include automatic activity tracking, zone minutes (or how much time you spend in your fat-burn, cardio, and peak heart-rate zones), and sleep tracking.

Based on activity levels, sleep quality, and HRV, you also get a readiness score to help determine how much to push in your workouts, along with a stress management score, complete with tips on taking control of your stress. The best part: You get all of this for a much lower price than other smartwatches.

If you want more insight into your sleep, a premium Fitbit membership ($10/month) tells you if you hit the ideal range for important rest factors, like sleep-schedule variability, duration (overall and in deep and REM sleep), and restorative sleep (how much time you spent below your typical RHR).

Apple Watch Series 8

If you’re an iPhone user, nothing quite compares to owning an Apple Watch. The seamless connection between your watch and phone means you can always stay connected to calls, texts, meetings, and reminders. When it comes to training, Apple Watch also received some pretty useful updates over the past year to both the watchOS system in general and Series 8 specifically. Those updates include heart-rate training zones, better GPS, access to more stats you care about right on the screen, and fall detection (which activates emergency services if you’re unresponsive). Automatic tracking for Outdoor Cycling and auto pause and start also makes it easy to record ride metrics, even when you forget to check your watch consistently.

With the Apple Health app, you also get more in-depth sleep tracking, helping you stay in tune with your rest.

While you might have seen the launch of Apple Watch Ultra—a great choice for those heading into the woods and riding trails—road and pavement riders can stick with the Series 8, as it’s easier on the wallet.

Oura Ring

Ring

Best Recovery Tracker

Oura Ring

Oura Ring offers a super comfy alternative to smartwatches and stands out for putting rest first. You get a few measurements on the corresponding app: readiness, sleep, and activity levels. Oura Ring monitors RHR, HRV balance, body temperature, recovery index, sleep trends, sleep balance, and the previous day’s activity. Then, you get a score based on those numbers. Thanks to that temperature integration, the Ring can (pretty much) be an indicator for when you’re sick, reminding you to take extra rest.

Your sleep stats include REM, deep-sleep hours, and the percentages they make up for your nightly rest. It provides latency (the time it takes you to fall asleep), timing (it suggests your best bedtime), efficiency (time spent asleep versus awake in bed), and restfulness (which can indicate the quality of your zzzs).

While the Oura Ring also tells you calories burned and steps taken, the more eye-opening stat is inactivity for the day and whether you should move more every hour. Overall, it gives a solid picture of your activity compared to your rest, and to which one you owe more attention.

When it comes to choosing packaged foods for a meal or snack before, during, or after a ride, you want those that pack in nutrients and have a short ingredient list, says Kristen Arnold, R.D., a sports dietitian and level 2 USA Cycling coach. Aim for about 100 to 300 calories in your pre- and postride snacks, reaching for more carbs (about 20 to 40 grams per serving) before you start pedaling and more protein (about 15 to 30 grams per serving) after you’re done. It’s also helpful to avoid products with sugar alcohols and those high in fiber before your workouts, as those can lead to stomach issues, Arnold says. To help you hit your nutrition goals, stock up on these fueling foods.

Nuun has been a favorite postride hydration booster around the office for many years, and for good reason. Just pop a tablet in your water after a workout for extra sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. You can choose from a mix of flavors, from fruity to citrus.

For longer efforts on the bike, you need calories and electrolytes to keep your energy cruising. That’s where Gnarly comes in with nutrition to keep you fueled. In addition to electrolytes, you get carbs (sucrose and dextrose) and a branched-chain amino acid—and the cherry cola flavor is caffeinated.

Switch up your granola go-to with these squares that offer the nutritious, ancient whole grain buckwheat. They’re low in added sugar and high in prebiotic fiber and plant-based protein, as well as potassium and iron.

Plant-Based Protein Bars

Aloha Plant-Based Protein Bars

Made of organic ingredients and plant-based protein (a brown rice and pumpkin seed blend), these bars pack more than 10 grams of protein. While the texture is a little sticky, it’s still soft, easy to bite, and tasty—and doesn’t get stuck in your teeth like other protein bars. Some of the favorite flavors of testers include coconut chocolate almond, pumpkin spice, and peanut butter cup.

Don’t have time to make breakfast but want something sweet and nutritious? Pop these frozen mini-waffles into the oven. They come in delicious flavor combos, like mixed berry and almond, zucchini carrot, and peanut butter banana bread. These waffles have a short ingredient list and can sneak fruits and veggies into your morning meal. Top with nut butter and berries for even more good-for-you ingredients.

Musical Mango Energy Bar

Jambar Musical Mango Energy Bar

Get a taste of real mango from these organic, vegan, and gluten-free bars. The hearty texture comes from oat bran, cashew butter, and sunflower protein. They also have a 3:1 carb-to-protein ratio, which is ideal postride. Bonus points: 50 percent of the net profit of Jambar sales support active-living and music-related nonprofits.

There’s nothing quite like a classic PB&J on a long ride. Kram’s version makes it even easier to throw into your bag. It packs peanuts and peanut butter, along with fruit jelly (sans cane sugar) into sprouted and fermented whole wheat bread (think: Uncrustable, with more nutrients). The Beast option also includes grass-fed whey protein to beef up the macronutrient, making it a good choice after a ride or strength workout.

Superfood Energy Bites

Snacks for Wellness Superfood Energy Bites

Grab these when you want a dose of caffeine and chocolate in one brownie-like bite. They also include millet, the grain that gives it a super subtle crunch. Turn to them for a little kick (and some calories) when you don’t have time for coffee or a bigger bite.

Baked Green Pea Snacks

Harvest Snaps Baked Green Pea Snacks

Get a serving of veggies with these crisps, which have green peas as the first ingredient, meaning they make up the bulk of the bag. The mix of flavors will definitely satisfy salty and crunchy cravings; choose from tomato basil, wasabi ranch, organic sea salt, and more.

Whey protein is a foundational supplement, but for those following animal-free diets for health or moral reasons, this pivotal powder has been off-limits for years. That is, until Natreve shook up the supplement industry earlier this year with the launch of Mooless, a first-of-its-kind animal-free whey protein powder that utilizes microflora for the sake of creating tasty, nutritious shakes.
