The 11 Types of Dog Breeds In Paw Patrol

↓ Continue Reading To See This Amazing Video

Paw Patrol remains one of the most popular kid’s show in our day and age. This show features several dogs that rescue others and help out around town. Each dog has a specific job and looks different from the others. However, the show never blatantly tells the viewers what dogs they are. Some are pretty obvious, but others are less common.

Luckily, the creators of the show have stated the breeds of the main dogs during several interviews.

Let’s explore the dog breeds in Paw Patrol!

1. Chase

The 11 Types of Dog Breeds In Paw Patrol
German Shepherds are smart, loyal, affectionate dogs with a strong protective streak.

Chase remains one of the most popular dogs on the show. As the police dog, it is no surprise that Chase is a German Shepherd. Given this dog breed’s popularity, most people quickly catch onto Chase’s breed.

Despite outranking many dog breeds in popularity, German Shepherds aren’t the best dog for many families. They’re large, agile dogs that originally guarded sheep and other animals. They don’t have herding instincts, as they weren’t herding dogs. However, they have very apparent guarding instincts today, although they are commonly kept as companion animals.

For this reason, German Shepherds require a lot of socialization. They tend to be aloof around strangers, even with proper socialization. If they aren’t raised correctly, these canines may even be aggressive, though temperament tests show they aren’t particularly dangerous.

Luckily, the German Shepherds have a degree of intelligence and become very devoted to their family. Though a novice owner isn’t recommended for this breed, they’re pretty easy to train.

More and more German Shepherds are being kept solely as show or companion animals. Therefore, many of their guarding instincts have faded. They’ve also developed genetic predispositions towards certain illnesses, especially those related to their back and hips. Working-line and show-line German Shepherds are slowly becoming more and more different.

Most of the time, working-line German Shepherds work best for families, as they are more trainable and healthier.

2. Marshall

Marshall is a Dalmatian. His spots are a sure giveaway, and he works as the group’s firefighter.

Dalmatians originally worked around carriages. They’re known for being great with horses. However, they were also bred with guarding instincts to protect carriages and those inside them. They weren’t always utilized for firefighting carriages, but that is what they were best known for.

Dalmatians still possess some guarding instincts, so they usually remain aloof toward strangers. Socialization is required to prevent aggression and fear-driven behaviors. If they aren’t introduced to new people, situations and puppies, they will be fearful of them later.

These canines make dependable watchdogs, as well. They’re very loyal to their family and can be affectionate. However, they’re also prone to some health issues, like blindness. Dogs with more pigment (aka spots) are less prone to sight and hearing problems.

3. English Bulldog

Because English Bulldogs are prone to various health issues, they can cost up to 60{bf0515afdcaddba073662ceb89fbb62b6b1bf123143c0e06b788e1946e8c353f} more to insure.

Rubble is an English Bulldog, which is pretty apparent given his underbite. This breed is surprisingly popular, given their health issues. Their distinctive appearance often causes brachycephaly (affecting the dog’s breathing), hip dysplasia, skin problems, and heat sensitivity. They’re even sensitive to food allergies. Dogs from show lines are often even worse off, with some requiring surgery to correct their snout.

This canine also costs far more than others. They cannot breed normally; most puppies must be born via surgery. This extra cost adds to the puppies’ total cost, making them very expensive.

These dogs are illegal in several countries due to quality-of-life concerns.

Bulldogs have a wonderful, companionable temperament. They’re very courageous and friendly. They aren’t particularly trainable, though, as their executive function skills are lower than other dogs. It isn’t that they can’t learn commands; they have a hard time following them.

4. Zuma

Labrador Retriever Puppy
Many Labrador retriever puppies are born with blue eyes before their eyes turn brown or hazel.

While it may not be obvious, Zuma is a chocolate Labrador Retriever. This explains why he likes water, as this breed originally retrieved games like ducks from ponds. Today, this breed is popular in the United States and several other western countries.

They’re known for being energetic and friendly. This dog is great with children and bonds closely with its family members, though they love just about everyone. They’re extremely trainable, making them suitable choices as service dogs.

The Labrador is a healthy breed with few health problems. However, they can miss part of the gene that regulates hunger. Therefore, they cannot be free-fed. Otherwise, they will continuously eat until they become obese (or even throw up, sometimes). Luckily, scheduled feedings allow this disposition to be controlled.

Sadly, chocolate-colored labs are more likely to have health issues, although it is unknown why.

5. Skye

Many breeders charge a high price for their cockapoo puppies. However, there are cockapoo rescue organizations where someone can adopt a dog for little to no cost.

©mountaintreks/Shutterstock.com

Skye is the first female pup on the Paw Patrol team. She’s a Cockapoo, which is a mix between a Cocker Spaniel and Miniature Poodle. Mixed breeds aren’t as recognizable as purebred dogs, so recognizing them can be more challenging. Out of all mixed breeds, the Cockapoo was one of the first to gain considerable popularity within the USA.

The Cockapoo’s original purpose was to be a companion animal.

Cockapoos can inherit any trait from any parent. Therefore, their characteristics can vary a lot. They can be practically any color or combination of colors with curly, wavy, or straight hair. Unlike much of the information on the web, these dogs are not hypoallergenic.

Several types of Cockapoos are available, too, depending on their generation. Dogs further away from the initial crossbreeding are more “standard.” Therefore, if you want a Cockapoo but don’t want to deal with the uncertainty, you can find a breeder breeding Cockapoos together directly.

6. Everest

Gray Dog Breeds
Siberian Huskies were originally bred to help the Chukchi people of Siberia hunt more efficiently.

©iStock.com/ortlemma

According to the creators of the show, Everest is a Siberian Husky. This breed originally pulled sleds in Alaska, along with the similar-looking Alaskan Malamute. This canine belongs to the spitz family, inheriting distinctive markings and a partially curled tail.

Today, this breed is largely kept as pets, though they can be quite a lot of work. They were bred to pull for much of the day, so they’re extremely active and require plenty of exercise. They are the perfect companion to an active family that can give them the necessary exercise.

Siberian Huskies are quite intelligent. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are very trainable. Instead, they tend to be quite stubborn. They’re smart enough to understand commands but often don’t listen to them in real-world situations. Furthermore, they have difficulty applying commands to varied situations. They also have a high prey drive, so it is best to keep them on a leash at all times.

Huskies can be very good escape artists. They’re known for opening gates and climbing fences.

These dogs are typically good with children. However, they can have excitable periods indoors and may accidentally knock children over. Therefore, supervision and care should be taken.

7. Rocky

Unlike most Paw Patrol dogs, Rocky doesn’t have a specific breed. Instead, he is likely some sort of mixed-breed terrier. These canines are typically small, confident, and wiry. They were bred to hunt smaller games, such as rats. Farmers often kept them to keep small animals out of their gardens and barn. Later, they were sometimes utilized in factories, on boats, and around large estates.

Today, terriers can still be utilized for all of these purposes. They’re very good at keeping small animals away from gardens, as they have a strong prey drive and will chase just about anything. However, they’re more commonly kept as companion animals.

These dogs make good family pets, especially in families with children. They tend to have extreme amounts of energy and require a lot of exercise. A fenced-in yard is highly recommended, as they are known for their escape skills.

8. Tracker

Tracker is a Chihuahua, which is fitting, as this breed is one of the few native South American canines. Genetic testing has revealed that these dogs likely ended up in America around 10,000 years ago, where they developed isolated until the arrival of the Europeans. However, after the Europeans brought over their own canines, the native breed began interbreeding. Today, the original genes are practically all gone. Only 4{bf0515afdcaddba073662ceb89fbb62b6b1bf123143c0e06b788e1946e8c353f} of the current Chihuahua genetics are related to the original breed.

Chihuahuas are the smallest breed of dog recognized by most kennel clubs. They come in various color combinations and have an “apple-shaped” head, according to the breed standards. Some Chihuahuas exhibit the older deer-shaped head type, though.

Slowly, Chihuahuas have become smaller and smaller. Largely, this is because the breed standard often prioritized smaller dogs. However, smaller Chihuahuas tend to have a higher disposition for health problems.

The only color that isn’t recognized in many kennel clubs is merle due to its correlation with increased health problems.

9. Rex

Rex is a newer Paw Patrol member that is only around during special episodes. This dog is currently the only disabled member of the team. He also belongs to a breed that isn’t as well known – the Bernese Mountain Dog. This dog weighs up to 150 pounds maximum, and males are much larger than females.

These canines originate from Bern, Switzerland, hence their name. They are probably related to the Roman mastiffs, which were taken to the area thousands of years ago. Alpine herders utilized them to guard both the herds and the herder. The breed’s standard was established in 1912.

Unlike other guard dogs, they don’t have difficulties with strangers. While they require some socialization, they tend to be friendly toward strangers. They do require a bit of exercise, but they don’t have tons of endurance. Therefore, they do spend a lot of their time lying around.

Often, this breed does pretty well with children. They can be very affectionate, though they aren’t lap does by any means. Their larger size allows them to put up with a lot from children.

10. Tuck and Ella

Tuck and Ella only show up in a few episodes, but they quickly became fan favorites. These dogs are Golden Retrievers, a popular breed in the United States. As the name suggests, this breed has a background as a Retriever. This canine originated from Scotland, where it was utilized to retrieve game from water, like ducks.

Today, the breed is utilized as a gundog, companion, and frequent competitor in obedience trials. They’re very similar to other retrievers, one of which we have already discussed. They’re gentle and affectionate, bonding closely with their humans. Like most retrieving breeds, Golden Retrievers are often very tolerant of children, making them great family pets. They’re practically devoid of guarding instincts, so they are typically friendly with strangers.

They have a strong instinct to retrieve, so they love to play fetch and similar games.

Compared to other breeds, Golden Retrievers are slow to mature. Therefore, they stay puppies for longer. Sadly, this longer maturity doesn’t necessarily mean they have a longer lifespan.

11. Liberty

Dachshunds are known to be bold and stubborn dogs.

©Leka Sergeeva/Shutterstock.com

Liberty is currently only in the new Paw Patrol movie. She belongs to the Dachshund breed and is probably a long-haired Dachshund, more specifically. These dogs may be extremely small, but they aren’t toy dogs. Instead, they belong to the hound group. They were bred to scent, chase, and burrow after burrowing animals, like badgers. Therefore, they tend to be extremely bold and stubborn dogs.

These dogs have very little legs to help them dive into burrows. However, this trait elates their back, as their legs aren’t properly supporting their spine. This issue can cause back problems, including paralysis. Their backs are more easily injured. Otherwise, luckily, they’re quite healthy dogs.

Dachshunds can be extremely playful, but they are also very stubborn. They have a high prey drive, so they chase just about anything. They’re intelligent dogs, but they have a mind of their own. Therefore, they only listen to about 50{bf0515afdcaddba073662ceb89fbb62b6b1bf123143c0e06b788e1946e8c353f} of the commands. They are prone to separation anxiety and are known to chew on things. They’re known for being destructive if they don’t have their needs met.

Bonus: Al

Al is a brand new pup that popped up in Season 9. He is a Basset Hound, which is quite similar to Dachshunds. This breed has shorter legs and many of the same issues as the Dachshund. Their back is more likely to be injured, which may cause paralysis. They’re shorter for a different reason than the Dachshund, though. They are tracking dogs, and their short stature helps them reach the ground.

The Basset Hound tends to have an outgoing and playful canine. They’re surprisingly athletic and require a lot of activity, though their smaller stature makes this easy to accomplish indoors. They’re also widely known for being incredibly stubborn, like most hounds.

3 Best Types of Workouts for Weight Loss in 2023

It’s no secret — regular exercise is the key to overall health. While any movement is good movement, some exercises are more effective than others when it comes to losing weight and reaching your health goals in 2023. Tailoring your workouts to best meet your specific needs and goals can make a real difference.

CNET Health Tips logo

It’s a given that all forms of exercise help you get your heart rate up, which allows you to burn calories. But after that, things can get confusing. With so many options — and many claiming to be the “best program” that guarantees the “best results” — it can be difficult to know which workouts can help you reach the results you want for the time you invest.

All exercise can help with weight loss, improve mental health and provide many benefits other than just losing weight. But if you’re feeling stuck in your current routine or want to try new exercises in the new year that can help you lose weight more efficiently and effectively, these three expert-approved exercises can help.

There’s nothing wrong with doing exercises outside of this list, by the way, or exercising just for the sake of enjoying it.

1. Cardio

The first exercise that many people do when they want to lose weight is cardio. And while cardio is great for elevating your heart rate and burning calories, it’s not the most efficient exercise you can do for weight loss. Cardio is important to lose weight, but to really take your results up a notch you need to add in some exercises that build your muscles too. Cardio is an important part of any exercise routine, and you should include it in your weekly routine, along with strength training.

Cardio intervals vs. steady-state training

Not all cardio is the same when it comes to weight loss. Any type of cardio is important for including in a well-balanced workout program, but the two main types of cardio are steady-state cardio and interval-based cardio.

Cardio intervals: Cardio intervals can consist of any type of exercise you enjoy (running, jogging, walking, cycling) except you alternate intense periods with lower-intensity periods to recover, like alternating jogging with a sprint. The intense periods are shorter (like one to two minutes) and you usually recover for about twice that (two to four minutes) depending on the workout.

Cardio exercises, like running, help elevate your heart rate and burn calories.

Steady-state cardio: Steady-state cardio is when you do any type of exercise, like running or cycling, and stay at a steady pace. It’s effective for improving your endurance and stamina and will help you burn calories since you increase your heart rate, although it will likely stay lower than in the interval range. When it comes to weight loss, research shows that interval training, like HIIT, is more effective than doing cardio at a steady pace. Many people will alternate steady-state cardio session days with interval-based cardio days. There are many different cardio workouts to choose from, such as biking, jogging, walking and dancing, and just because weight loss is a goal does not mean you have to do something high-impact that’s hard on your joints.

High-impact vs. low-impact cardio

While both forms of cardio are effective, if you are concerned about your joints keeping up with your new workout routine, or you know that previous injuries limit you from doing high-impact movement, low-impact cardio is a great option. You can combine low-impact cardio with bodyweight exercises, like in this workout below from LIT Method, a low-impact, high-intensity workout.

“Compound low-impact movements are the best exercises for weight loss as these movements involve multiple major muscle groups, resulting in max calorie burn and save your joints,” says Justin Norris, a personal trainer and co-founder of LIT Method. “Some of these exercises include squats, inchworms, modified burpees and marchers. All of these low-impact exercises are high-intensity movements that are guaranteed to elevate your heart rate and allow you to workout more frequently.”

2. Strength training

Strength training is important for weight loss since it helps you increase muscle mass.

Strength training, with your own body weight or lifting weights, is one of the most effective ways to lose weight. Why? First, lifting weights can help you lose fat while still building muscle, which is awesome for your metabolism. Muscle mass burns more calories than fat, which means you burn more calories every day when you have more muscle, even while you’re sleeping.

Muscle mass does not make up for the nutrition side of weight loss, but it can help. Keep in mind, it’s your choice whether you use lighter or heavier weights, but both weight categories require a different approach to build muscle effectively. In general, lighter weights require a higher number of reps and sets, and heavier weights require fewer reps and sets.

Strength training often involves using dumbbells or weight machines, but you really don’t need extra equipment to build strength. Using your own body weight as resistance is a highly effective and convenient way to workout — since dumbbells are basically impossible to find online right now.

“Strength training is key in weight loss because the more muscle you have on your body, the more calories you burn,” says Bryna Carracino, a fitness coach and founding trainer of beRevolutionarie. “The more lean muscle you have on the body the higher your metabolism runs, which in turn promotes healthy weight loss.”

Dumbbell squat

Bryna Caracino

Dumbbells racked either resting on shoulders or back of dumbbells pressed into the front shoulder. If you’re a beginner you can leave the dumbbells by your side.

Think of a squat like you’re sitting into a chair. Press your booty back, lowering your body with your chest pressed forward. Pull all 10 toes off the ground so you’re sitting back into the posterior (back part of body). As you start to drive back up, press weight through your heels, engaging glutes and hamstrings back to standing position.

Medicine ball wood chop

Bryna Caraccino

Start with feet shoulder-width apart. Hold the medicine ball at the chest with both hands. Rotate your torso to the right and raise the medicine ball over the right shoulder. Squat and rotate to the left, bringing the medicine ball diagonally across the body until the ball is as close to the outside of the left foot.

Burpees

Bryna Caraccino

Do a squat, then place your hands on the floor, jump back into a pushup position, lower your body all the way to the ground. Press your body back up into a pushup position. Jump the feet forward landing on the outside of your hands, then jump up as high as you can.

Modification: Take out all of the jumping. So you can step back into plank, step forward into a squat, and skip the jump at the top.

3. Compound movements

So how do you combine cardio with strength exercises so that you’re not only burning calories but also building strength? “Some of the best exercises for weight loss are full-body compound movements cycled with cardio sessions,” says Brooke Taylor, a certified personal trainer founder of the Ignite Program. “A compound movement is a multijoint exercise that is designed to target multiple muscle groups at one time.

“It is so important to mix in both weights and cardio interval training if you want to change your body composition, improve muscle mass and tone up the supporting muscles. This goes hand in hand with building bone density and strengthening your cardiovascular system,” Taylor says.

Full-body workout with compound exercises

For cardio you can do one minute of jump rope in between each exercise.

Push up to renegade row tricep kickback

“This exercise activates the anterior and posterior chain of the body, elevates the heart rate and engages the deep stabilizers of the body,” Taylor says.

  • Start in a plank position with the hands directly underneath your shoulders holding the weights, your legs slightly wider than hip distance apart, activating your core and glutes throughout.
  • As you inhale, lower your body down forming a 90-degree angle at the elbow, exhale to press the floor away.
  • Inhale slightly, shift your weight to balance on one side as you exhale, draw your navel in towards your spine as you pull the opposite elbow in towards your ribcage and extend it back in line with your hip.
  • Inhale to lower the arm down, transfer the weight to the other side and pull the arm in towards the ribcage, kickback then lower.
  • The goal is to keep the pelvis and spine neutral throughout, abs engaged and core tight.

Burpee to bicep curls

  • Start in a plank position with your shoulders directly over your wrists.
  • As you exhale jump your legs into straddle the mat as you simultaneously drop your sitz bones down and bicep curl.
  • Inhale to lower the hands down.
  • Repeat for 15 reps.

Final thoughts

At the end of the day, you need to be in a calorie deficit — through a combination of what you eat and burn through exercise — to lose weight. So exercise is definitely key, but so is a balanced, nutritious diet, and a focus on your macronutrients. Learning how to calculate your macros can sometimes be easier to manage than counting calories, and some say it’s more effective. The key is finding out which ratios you need based on your goals, which a professional or a macros calculator can help you with.

Remember that good recovery habits are just as important as your workouts. When it comes to exercise, more is not always better, and it’s important to give your body a change to rest and repair. Not doing so can result in overtraining syndrome, which can lead to injury, fatigue, sleep problems or set you back in your goals.

Clinical Research: A Review of Study Designs, Hypotheses, Errors, Sampling Types, Ethics, and Informed Consent

To conduct successful and credible research, scientists/researchers should understand the key elements of clinical research like neutrality (unbiased), reliability, validity, and generalizability. Moreover, results from clinical studies are applied in the real world to benefit human health. As a result, researchers must understand the various types of research designs [1]. Before choosing a research design, the researchers must work out the aims and objectives of the study, identify the study population, and address the ethical concerns associated with the clinical study. Another significant aspect of clinical studies is the research methodology and the statistical applications that are employed to process the data and draw conclusions. There are primarily two types of research designs: observational studies and experimental studies [2]. Observational studies do not involve any interventions and are therefore considered inferior to experimental designs. The experimental studies include the clinical trials that are carried out among a selected group of participants who are given a drug to assess its safety and efficacy in treating and managing the disease. However, in the absence of a study group, a single-case experimental design (SCED) was suggested as an alternative methodology that is equally reliable as a randomization study [3]. The single case study designs are called N-of-1 type clinical trials [4,5]. The N-of-1 study design is being increasingly applied in healthcare-related research. Experimental studies are complex and are generally performed by pharmaceutical industries as a part of research and development activities during the discovery of a therapeutic drug/device. Also, clinical trials are undertaken by individual researchers or a consortium. In a recent study, the researchers were cautioned about the consequences of a faulty research design [6]. It was noted that clinical studies on the effect of the gut microbiome and its relationship with the feed could potentially be influenced by the choice of the experimental design, controls, and comparison groups included in the study. Moreover, clinical studies can be affected by sampling errors and biases [7]. In the present review, we briefly discuss the types of clinical study designs, study hypotheses, sampling errors, and the ethical issues associated with clinical research.

Research design

A research design is a systematic elucidation of the whole research process that includes methods and techniques, starting from the planning of research, execution (data collection), analysis, and drawing a logical conclusion based on the results obtained. A research design is a framework developed by a research team to find an answer/solution to a problem. The research designs are of several types that include descriptive research, surveys, correlation type, experimental, review (systematic/literature), and meta-analysis. The choice of research design is determined by the type of research question that is opted for. Both the research design and the research question are interdependent. For every research question, a complementary/appropriate research design must have been chosen. The choice of research design influences the research credibility, reliability, and accuracy of the data collected. A well-defined research design would contain certain elements that include a specific purpose of the research, methods to be applied while collecting and analyzing the data, the research methodology used to interpret the collected data, research infrastructure, limitations, and most importantly, the time required to complete the research. The research design can broadly be categorized into two types: qualitative and quantitative designs. In a qualitative research method, the collected data are measured and evaluated using mathematical and statistical applications. Whereas in quantitative research, a larger sample size is selected, and the results derived from statistics can benefit society. The various types of research designs are shown in Figure 1 [8].

Types of research studies

There are various types of research study designs. The researcher who aims to take up the study determines the type of study design to choose among the available ones. The choice of study design depends on many factors that include but are not limited to the research question, the aim of the study, the available funds, manpower, and infrastructure, among others. The research study designs include systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials, cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, cohort studies, case reports/studies, animal experiments, and other in vitro studies, as shown in Figure 2 [9].

Systematic Reviews

In these studies, the researcher makes an elaborate and up-to-date search of the available literature. By doing a systematic review of a selected topic, the researcher collects the data, analyses it, and critically evaluates it to evolve with impactful conclusions. Systematic reviews could equip healthcare professionals with more than adequate evidence with respect to the decisions to be taken during improved patient management that may include diagnosis, interventions, prognosis, and others [10]. A recent systematic research study evaluated the role of socioeconomic conditions on the knowledge of risk factors for stroke in the World Health Organization (WHO) European region. This study collected data from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science (WoS), and other sources and finally included 20 studies and 67,309 subjects. This study concluded that the high socioeconomic group had better knowledge of risk factors and warning signs of stroke and suggested improved public awareness programs to better address the issue [11].

Meta-Analysis

Meta-analysis is like a systematic review, but this type of research design uses quantitative tools that include statistical methods to draw conclusions. Such a research method is therefore considered both equal and superior to the original research studies. Both the systematic review and the meta-analyses follow a similar research process that includes the research question, preparation of a protocol, registration of the study, devising study methods using inclusion and exclusion criteria, an extensive literature survey, selection of studies, assessing the quality of the evidence, data collection, analysis, assessment of the evidence, and finally the interpretation/drawing the conclusions [12]. A recent research study, using a meta-analytical study design, evaluated the quality of life (QoL) among patients suffering from chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD). This study used WoS to collect the studies, and STATA to analyze and interpret the data. The study concluded that non-therapeutic mental health and multidisciplinary approaches were used to improve QoL along with increased support from high-income countries to low and middle-income countries [13].

Cross-Sectional Studies

These studies undertake the observation of a select population group at a single point in time, wherein the subjects included in the studies are evaluated for exposure and outcome simultaneously. These are probably the most common types of studies undertaken by students pursuing postgraduation. A recent study evaluated the activities of thyroid hormones among the pre- and post-menopausal women attending a tertiary care teaching hospital. The results of this study demonstrated that there was no significant difference in the activities of thyroid hormones in the study groups [14].

Cohort Studies

Cohort studies use participant groups called cohorts, which are followed up for a certain period and assess the exposure to the outcome. They are used for epidemiological observations to improve public health. Although cohort studies are laborious, financially burdensome, and difficult to undertake as they require a large population group, such study designs are frequently used to conduct clinical studies and are only second to randomized control studies in terms of their significance [15]. Also, cohort studies can be undertaken both retrospectively and prospectively. A retrospective study assessed the effect of alcohol intake among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected persons under the national program of the United States of America (USA) for HIV care. This study, which included more than 30,000 HIV patients under the HIV care continuum program, revealed that excessive alcohol use among the participants affected HIV care, including treatment [16].

Case-Control Study

The case-control studies use a single point of observation among two population groups that are categorized based on the outcome. Those who had an outcome are termed as cases, and the ones who did not develop the disease are called control groups. This type of study design is easy to perform and is extensively undertaken as a part of medical research. Such studies are frequently used to assess the efficacy of vaccines among the population [17]. A previous study evaluated the activities of zinc among patients suffering from beta-thalassemia and compared it with the control group. This study concluded that the patients with beta-thalassemia are prone to hypozincaemia and had low concentrations of zinc as compared to the control group [18].

Case Studies

Such types of studies are especially important from the perspective of patient management. Although these studies are just observations of single or multiple cases, they may prove to be particularly important in the management of patients suffering from unusual diseases or patients presenting with unusual presentations of a common disease. Listeria is a bacterium that generally affects humans in the form of food poisoning and neonatal meningitis. Such an organism was reported to cause breast abscesses [19].

Randomized Control Trial

This is probably the most trusted research design that is frequently used to evaluate the efficacy of a novel pharmacological drug or a medical device. This type of study has a negligible bias, and the results obtained from such studies are considered accurate. The randomized controlled studies use two groups, wherein the treatment group receives the trial drug and the other group, called the placebo group, receives a blank drug that appears remarkably like the trial drug but without the pharmacological element. This can be a single-blind study (only the investigator knows who gets the trial drug and who is given a placebo) or a double-blind study (both the investigator and the study participant have no idea what is being given). A recent study (clinical trial registration number: NCT04308668) concluded that post-exposure prophylaxis with hydroxychloroquine does not protect against Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) after a high and moderate risk exposure when the treatment was initiated within four days of potential exposure [20].

Factors that affect study designs

Among the different factors that affect a study’s design is the recruitment of study participants. It is not yet clear as to what is the optimal method to increase participant participation in clinical studies. A previous study had identified that the language barrier and the long study intervals could potentially hamper the recruitment of subjects for clinical trials [21]. It was noted that patient recruitment for a new drug trial is more difficult than for a novel diagnostic study [22].

Reproducibility is an important factor that affects a research design. The study designs must be developed in such a way that they are replicable by others. Only those studies that can be re-done by others to generate the same/similar results are considered credible [23]. Choosing an appropriate study design to answer a research question is probably the most important factor that could affect the research result [24]. This can be addressed by clearly understanding various study designs and their applications before selecting a more relevant design.

Retention is another significant aspect of the study design. It is hard to hold the participants of a study until it is completed. Loss of follow-up among the study participants will influence the study results and the credibility of the study. Other factors that considerably influence the research design are the availability of a source of funding, the necessary infrastructure, and the skills of the investigators and clinical trial personnel.

Synthesizing a research question or a hypothesis

A research question is at the core of research and is the point from which a clinical study is initiated. It should be well-thought-out, clear, and concise, with an arguable element that requires the conduction of well-designed research to answer it. A research question should generally be a topic of curiosity in the researcher’s mind, and he/she must be passionate enough about it to do all that is possible to answer it [25].

A research question must be generated/framed only after a preliminary literature search, choosing an appropriate topic, identifying the audience, self-questioning, and brainstorming for its clarity, feasibility, and reproducibility.

A recent study suggested a stepwise process to frame the research question. The research question is developed to address a phenomenon, describe a case, establish a relationship for comparison, and identify causality, among others. A better research question is one that describes the statement of the problem, points out the study area, puts focus on the study aspects, and guides data collection, analysis, and interpretation. The aspects of a good research question are shown in Figure 3 [26].

Research questions may be framed to prove the existence of a phenomenon, describe and classify a condition, elaborate the composition of a disease condition, evaluate the relationship between variables, describe and compare disease conditions, establish causality, and compare the variables resulting in causality. Some examples of the research questions include: (i) Does the coronavirus mutate when it jumps from one organism to another?; (ii) What is the therapeutic efficacy of vitamin C and dexamethasone among patients infected with COVID-19?; (iii) Is there any relationship between COPD and the complications of COVID-19?; (iv) Is Remdesivir alone or in combination with vitamin supplements improve the outcome of COVID-19?; (v) Are males more prone to complications from COVID-19 than females?

The research hypothesis is remarkably like a research question except for the fact that in a hypothesis the researcher assumes either positively or negatively about a causality, relation, correlation, and association. An example of a research hypothesis: overweight and obesity are risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Types of errors in hypothesis testing

An assumption or a preliminary observation made by the researcher about the potential outcome of research that is being envisaged may be called a hypothesis. There are different types of hypotheses, including simple hypotheses, complex hypotheses, empirical hypotheses, statistical hypotheses, null hypotheses, and alternative hypotheses. However, the null hypothesis (H0) and the alternative hypothesis (HA) are commonly practiced. The H0 is where the researcher assumes that there is no relation/causality/effect, and the HA is when the researcher believes/assumes that there is a relationship/effect [27,28].

Hypothesis testing is affected by two types of errors that include the type I error (α) and the type II error (β). The type I error (α) occurs when the investigator contradicts the null hypothesis despite it being true, which is considered a false positive error. The type II error (β) happens when the researcher considers/accepts the null hypothesis despite it being false, which is termed a false negative error [28,29].

The reasons for errors in the hypothesis testing may be due to bias and other causes. Therefore, the researchers set the standards for studies to rule out errors. A 5{bf0515afdcaddba073662ceb89fbb62b6b1bf123143c0e06b788e1946e8c353f} deviation (α=0.05; range: 0.01-0.10) in the case of a type I error and up to a 20{bf0515afdcaddba073662ceb89fbb62b6b1bf123143c0e06b788e1946e8c353f} probability (β=0.20; range: 0.05-0.20) for type II errors are generally accepted [28,29]. The features of a reasonable hypothesis include simplicity and specificity, and the hypothesis is generally determined by the researcher before the initiation of the study and during the preparation of the study proposal/protocol [28,29].

The applications of hypothesis testing

A hypothesis is tested by assessing the samples, where appropriate statistics are applied to the collected data and an inference is drawn from it. It was noted that a hypothesis can be made based on the observations of physicians using anatomical characteristics and other physiological attributes [28,30]. The hypothesis may also be tested by employing proper statistical techniques. Hypothesis testing is carried out on the sample data to affirm the null hypothesis or otherwise.

An investigator needs to believe the null hypothesis or accept that the alternate hypothesis is true based on the data collected from the samples. Interestingly, most of the time, a study that is carried out has only a 50{bf0515afdcaddba073662ceb89fbb62b6b1bf123143c0e06b788e1946e8c353f} chance of either the null hypothesis or the alternative hypothesis coming true [28,31].

Hypothesis testing is a step-by-step strategy that is initiated by the assumption and followed by the measures applied to interpret the results, analysis, and conclusion. The margin of error and the level of significance (95{bf0515afdcaddba073662ceb89fbb62b6b1bf123143c0e06b788e1946e8c353f} free of type I error and 80{bf0515afdcaddba073662ceb89fbb62b6b1bf123143c0e06b788e1946e8c353f} free of type II error) are initially fixed. This enables the chance for the study results to be reproduced by other researchers [32].

Ethics in health research

Ethical concerns are an important aspect of civilized societies. Moreover, ethics in medical research and practice assumes increased significance as most health-related research is undertaken to find a cure or discover a medical device/diagnostic tool that can either diagnose or cure the disease. Because such research involves human participants, and due to the fact that people approach doctors to find cures for their diseased condition, ethics, and ethical concerns take center stage in public health-related clinical/medical practice and research.

The local and international authorities like the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) make sure that health-related research is carried out following all ethical concerns and good clinical practice (GCP) guidelines. The ethics guidelines are prescribed by both national and international bodies like the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the World Medical Association (WMA) Declaration of Helsinki guidelines for ethical principles for medical research involving human subjects [33].

Ethical conduct is more significant during clinical practice, medical education, and research. It is recommended that medical practitioners embark on self-regulation of the medical profession. Becoming proactive in terms of ethical practices will enhance the social image of a medical practitioner/researcher. Moreover, such behavior will allow people to comprehend that this profession is not for trade/money but for the benefit of the patients and the public at large. Administrations should promote ethical practitioners and penalize unethical practitioners and clinical research organizations. It is suggested that the medical curriculum should incorporate ethics as a module and ethics-related training must be delivered to all medical personnel. It should be noted that a tiny seed grows into an exceptionally gigantic tree if adequately watered and taken care of [33]. It is therefore inevitable to address the ethical concerns in medical education, research and practice to make more promising medical practitioners and acceptable medical educators and researchers as shown in Figure 4.

Sampling in health research

Sampling is the procedure of picking a precise number of individuals from a defined group to accomplish a research study. This sample is a true representative subset of individuals who potentially share the same characteristics as a large population, and the results of the research can be generalized [34,35]. Sampling is a prerogative because it is almost impossible to include all the individuals who want to partake in a research investigation. A sample identified from a representative population can be depicted in Figure 5.

Sampling methods are of different types and are broadly classified into probability sampling and non-probability sampling. In a probability sampling method, which is routinely employed in quantitative research, each individual in the representative population is provided with an equivalent likelihood of being included in the study [35]. Probability sampling can be separated into four types that include simple random sampling, systematic sampling, stratified sampling, and cluster sampling, as shown in Figure 6.

Simple Random Sample

In the simple random sampling method, every person in the representative population is given an equal chance of being selected. It may use a random number generator for selecting the study participants. To study the employees’ perceptions of government policies, a researcher initially assigns a number to each employee [35]. After this, the researcher randomly chooses the required number of samples. In this type of sampling method, each one has an equal chance of being selected.

Systematic Sample

In this sampling method, the researcher selects the study participants depending on a pre-defined order (1, 3, 5, 7, 9…), wherein the researcher assigns a serial number (1-100 (n)) to volunteers [35]. The researcher in this type of sample selects a number from 1 to 10 and later applies a systematic pattern to select the sample like 2, 12, 22, 32, etc.

Stratified Sample

The stratified sampling method is applied when the people from whom the sample must be taken have mixed features. In this type of sampling, the representative population is divided into clusters/strata based on attributes like age, sex, and other factors. Subsequently, a simple random or systematic sampling method is applied to select the samples from each group. Initially, different age groups, sexes, and other characters were selected as a group [35]. The investigator finds his/her sample from each group using simple or systematic random sampling methods.

Cluster Sample

This sampling method is used to create clusters of the representative population with mixed qualities. Because such groups have mixed features, each one can be regarded as a sample. Conversely, a sample can be developed by using simple random/systematic sampling approaches. The cluster sampling method is similar to stratified sampling but differs in the group characteristics, wherein each group has representatives of varied ages, different sexes, and other mixed characters [35]. Although each group appears as a sample, the researcher again applies a simple or systematic random sampling method to choose the sample.

Non-probability Sample

In this type of sampling method, the participants are chosen based on non-random criteria. In a non-probability sampling method, the volunteers do not have an identical opportunity to get selected. This method, although it appears to be reasonable and effortless to do, is plagued by selection bias. The non-probability sampling method is routinely used in experimental and qualitative research. It is suitable to perform a pilot study that is carried out to comprehend the qualities of a representative population [35]. The non-probability sampling is of four types, including convenience sampling, voluntary response sampling, purposive sampling, and snowball sampling, as shown in Figure 7.

Convenience Sample

In the convenience sampling method, there are no pre-defined criteria, and only those volunteers who are readily obtainable to the investigator are included. Despite it being an inexpensive method, the results yielded from studies that apply convenience sampling may not reflect the qualities of the population, and therefore, the results cannot be generalized [35]. The best example of this type of sampling is when the researcher invites people from his/her own work area (company, school, city, etc.).

Voluntary Response Sample

In the voluntary response sampling method, the participants volunteer to partake in the study. This sampling method is similar to convenience sampling and therefore leaves sufficient room for bias [35]. The researcher waits for the participants who volunteer in the study in a voluntary response sampling method.

Purposive Sample/Judgment Sample

In the purposive or judgemental sampling method, the investigator chooses the participants based on his/her judgment/discretion. In this type of sampling method, the attributes (opinions/experiences) of the precise population group can be achieved [35]. An example of such a sampling method is the handicapped group’s opinion on the facilities at an educational institute.

Snowball Sample

In the snowball sampling method, suitable study participants are found based on the recommendations and suggestions made by the participating subjects [36]. In this type, the individual/sample recruited by the investigator in turn invites/recruits other participants.

Significance of informed consent and confidentiality in health research

Informed consent is a document that confirms the fact that the study participants are recruited only after being thoroughly informed about the research process, risks, and benefits, along with other important details of the study like the time of research. The informed consent is generally drafted in the language known to the participants. The essential contents of informed consent include the aim of research in a way that is easily understood even by a layman. It must also brief the person as to what is expected from participation in the study. The informed consent contains information such as that the participant must be willing to share demographic characteristics, participate in the clinical and diagnostic procedures, and have the liberty to withdraw from the study at any time during the research. The informed consent must also have a statement that confirms the confidentiality of the participant and the protection of privacy of information and identity [37].

Health research is so complex that there may be several occasions when a researcher wants to re-visit a medical record to investigate a specific clinical condition, which also requires informed consent [38]. Awareness of biomedical research and the importance of human participation in research studies is a key element in the individual’s knowledge that may contribute to participation or otherwise in the research study [39]. In the era of information technology, the patient’s medical data are stored as electronic health records. Research that attempts to use such records is associated with ethical, legal, and social concerns [40,41]. Improved technological advances and the availability of medical devices to treat, diagnose, and prevent diseases have thrown a new challenge at healthcare professionals. Medical devices are used for interventions only after being sure of the potential benefit to the patients, and at any cost, they must never affect the health of the patient and only improve the outcome [42]. Even in such cases, the medical persons must ensure informed consent from the patients.

Bad breath? Certain types of probiotic bacteria may help

When it comes to persistent poor breath, the kinds of probiotic germs identified in fermented meals like yogurt, sourdough bread and miso soup may perhaps help ease the offending odor, a new research implies.

An investigation of prior scientific tests unveiled that sure microbes taken as dietary supplements, such as Lactobacillus salivarius and Lactobacillus reuteri, could enable freshen breath, in accordance to the report, printed Tuesday in BMJ Open.

Poor breath, or halitosis, “is the 3rd most typical ailment for affected person referral to the dentist, only position driving [cavities] and periodontal sickness,” the Chinese scientists generate.

A main induce of persistent negative breath is gaseous blends of sulfur and other aspects, identified as risky sulfuric compounds, that are developed by mouth bacteria, the researchers be aware.

Would it be possible to neutralize the consequences of individuals compounds?

To choose a closer appear at regardless of whether probiotic germs might support take care of lousy breath, the scientists scoured the health-related literature for studies on the matter. Eventually, they discovered 7 scientific trials that included a whole of 278 individuals ages 19 to 70.

Undesirable breath severity in the trials was assessed by measurements of the compounds detected in the mouth, along with a rating that indicated how strong the undesirable breath odors were being at a variety of distances from the mouth.

Bad breath? Certain types of probiotic bacteria may help

When the researchers pooled the information from the 7 experiments, they discovered the compounds that are connected to smelly breath declined appreciably in contributors who eaten probiotics, compared to individuals who were being specified placebos. The improvements weren’t everlasting, however, long lasting about 4 weeks.

When the conclusions ended up encouraging, the scientists be aware that the unique reports were quite little.

“More high high-quality, randomized clinical trials are required in the future to validate the benefits and to give proof for the efficacy of probiotics for the management of halitosis,” they mentioned.

The conclusions make perception, mentioned Dr. Alessandro Villa, the chief of oral drugs, oral oncology and dentistry at the Miami Most cancers Institute at Baptist Overall health South Florida. What is not identified is no matter whether substituting genuine foodstuff like yogurt or pickles will have the very same constructive influence as having a nutritional supplement.

It would be reasonable for a human being with terrible breath to operate a brief experiment — for a 7 days or so — to see regardless of whether consuming these kinds of fermented food items could make a change, Villa mentioned.

Fermented and probiotic food items are produced up of advantageous stay microorganisms, but it’s essential to know what forms of and how significantly microbes they comprise, claimed Dr. Martinna Bertolini, an assistant professor in the section of periodontics and preventive dentistry at the University of Pittsburgh.

“One factor to contemplate is that the usage of dairy goods in purchase to involve a probiotics rich diet program may possibly also lead to an increase in carbohydrates and sugars usage and direct to improved accumulation of plaque and biofilm,” Bertolini reported in an electronic mail.

Nutritionist Perri Halperin stated individuals with persistent negative breath must see a dentist for probable underlying wellness difficulties.

“It could be indicative of wellness issues that are not essentially dental challenges,” stated Halperin, the scientific diet coordinator at Mount Sinai Clinic in New York.

Between the achievable causes of terrible breath are:

  • Gum sickness
  • Cavities
  • Specified food items, this sort of as garlic
  • Challenges with the tonsils
  • Kidney sickness
  • Severe diabetic issues
  • Dry mouth

Dry mouth, a condition in which the physique doesn’t deliver adequate saliva, can end result from bad hydration, as very well as medicines, such as some of those made use of to treat large blood force and diabetes, Villa explained.
